Kitchen Appliances - Freestanding

Hey,

Hoping to get some advice or assistance with how to tackle the awkwardness of freestanding appliances. I’ve recently moved into a new home and although I‘m perfectly fine with a freestanding fridge I’ve always found that freestanding cookers look horrible... I’ve reached out to the company that fitted the kitchen for a quote to get the extra integrated oven carcass and worktop but it’s come back at an astronomical rate... The kitchen itself is an awkward colour making it impossible to make any additions with generic off-the-shelf components (I’m even struggling to think what colour appliances would go with it). I really don’t know what to do, it’s almost like every room has a flaw and I’m a little disheartened and disappointed with the property on a whole.... (there just seems to be something with every room...).

Anyway, I’ve started to digress, does anyone have any idea on how to make a freestanding cooker, look... well.... not so horrible??

What size cooker are you looking for, and do you have photos of the kitchen etc so that we can make suggestions?

Do you mean you want a carcase for an undermounted oven (slot it under the worktop in place of the free standing one)? Because if so not all undermounted ovens require a carcase. Some do, some don't which is confusing but it is what it is. What colour is your current carcase?

If you want one fitted in a tower then you need a carcase and if it’s the carcase that may be difficult in terms of colour to match from a standard supplier just get a joiner to make one from buying a sheet of MFC from the likes of Egger or Pfleiderer and cut to size and assemble for you. Then you will need a door over and under and additional plinth and tall end panels.

Regarding the worktop again take a photo. I presume it’s a laminate and not quartz? If you’re taking out the freestanding oven to replace with a built under oven then you will need to replace the whole length of worktop. Do you know the brand? If you can’t get it to match then it may be the case that you will end up having to replace all of it in the kitchen to match.

It may be the architects design, but it's your home and your kitchen. If you are comfortable with the plan, then go for it! A perspective view would help visualize the cabinets. Something like this.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

In the main I agree with Patricia. I would move the dining table to the living area, move the living area to the kids room, move the island a little more to the right so it is just a little more over than the width of the entrance walkway, at the moment it is more to the left and almost interrupts the entry flow enough to keep catching your self on the edge, with the table moved it will allow this, plus there may be enough room for more storage on the right hand wall decorative or practical and naturally shallower than standard depth, consider what it would be used for then you can make an informed decision on depth. The island sink and bin are not far from the tall unit pantry and fridge, so no I don't think they are to far away, whatever you get from these places are to be opened probably by the sink or bin, or opened to eat from the packaging. Also why would you have a log burner and an aga in the same room unless your aga is an electric one? They both give of tremendous heat, an aga is constant and unless you have planned for other oven types it will be year round so summer as well, as Patricia mentioned bare in mind how the sun transits your house, where it's position is when you will be in these areas which I'm guessing will be most of the time. I know plenty of people who gave had " improvements revamps etc" to their kitchen dining living spaces with plenty of regrets, loads of glass to bring the outside in, underfloor heating and an aga, the underfloor heating is switched off you can't zone it to where you want it, and the aga gives of to much heat with the glass combined, all the hard surfaces, no acoustics were considered by the so called "architects" sound is a problem too, something else to consider, someone else had to have some of their new kitchen change to make room for an air conditioning unit because of the heat, this is very expensive to run constantly, summers are almost unbearable, these things also affect materials being used such as leather and wood drying out and cracking/splitting. I had a Zanussi freestanding cooker in my first house, the exact width of the gap so it looked fitted in. Stainless steel will go with any colour units and worktops.

So this is the kitchen I’m working with:-

It’s a new build and I’ve never seen units this colour in my life every other house in my row has white base units with grey or teal doors. I’ve contacted the kitchen manufacturer (Moores) and the worktop I have is discontinued but the rest of the range is still available, the prices they are quoting are simply unrealistic especially for the quality (it’s comparable to IKEA but they wanted £1800 for 2 x worktop, 2 x kickboard, 2 x upstand and the matching unit for the oven).

With it being a new build and requiring everything I’m simply not in a position to fit an entire new kitchen, so this was one option to try and take it up-a-level rather than having a freestanding cooker.

The gap for the oven is 600 x 630 (D x W)

There are several attractive free standing range style cookers in stainless steel that would fit your space and suit the colour of the units/worktop too. There’s more choice in dual fuel ranges - do you have a gas source too?

I much like your distinctive cabinet doors! One thing you could do if wanted a cost effective upgrade would be to replace the tap? And perhaps a fabulous framed print on the wall opposite the window?

630mm is an odd width. Perhaps it would be possible to move the drawer unit?

Can’t move anything unfortunately and if any units, worktop or upstand become damaged I won’t be able to replace it (discontinued) or the price is insane :(

The house is just awkward right through, everything just measures up obscure.... I’m pretty down and defeated with it all tbh, it’s a council property scheme through a housing association with right-to-buy on year 5 and it’s like at every turn they are making sure to remind you that you’ve had to get something through the scheme (the bathrooms are something you’d see in public toilets... simply terrible) and it’s impossible to make anything look nice...

If I were quoting from one of our cheapest ranges off the top of my head that would be around £700-£800. Unfitted.

If the space is 630mm wide then a standard undermounted oven is 600mm. They are all the same width. I would presume they have allowed for some end panels? I’m betting the splashback is 600 wide?

If that were me I’d buy the oven and get a local carpenter to fit it in. As I said most do not need a carcase so he would just have to fill the space with a 15mm panel which is easy enough to do as he could put a shelf into them to sit the oven on. Do remember a single oven will require a filler panel 110 x 600. A double oven does not require any fillers. Then you need a hob over it assuming you don’t have one.

I can’t tell from the image exactly what colour the fascias are. Are they a grey green? If so they could be called Dakar.

I agree with Daisy.
Buy the bare minimum (filler for the oven) from Moore’s and get an oven carcass and new worktops elsewhere so that it is future proofed and has the oven and hob you want

I’ve decided to just keep it “council estate” and go with a less appealing freestanding option, tbh I’m that defeated with it all and happy to just close the door on the room and be done with it.

I spoke to a local carpenter and he said that he hasn’t see this colour for the units before and wouldn’t be able to match it (I’d have to go white and he said it would be possible to see the difference even with the oven fit).
