Which kitchen window size do you prefer ?

Been amazing forum and one of last things need to do is decide on window size above kitchen sink, we are going 1050mm from the floor which gives us 50mm above the splash back we are using. Our ceilings are quite high at 2600mm so have chosen to go for 2300mm high tall units so as not to leave too big gap at top (other option was 2120).
I have been playing with couple of planners and neither of them have the exact sizes of units we are going for but give a pretty good representation of final design. The dilemma is the window size which will be centered on a 50cm sink, is going to be white aluminum, hinged at top opening outwards. The architect specified a 900mm wide and 1200mm high window and said that would be good proportions, seems a bit tall and thin, was tempted to go a bit wider, below are three pictures, first is 900mm wide by 1200mm high (the window lines up with cabinets in actual design but online planner I have didn't have the exact sizes, there is an island going in front so not sure if will ever really notice that):

Third is splitting the difference at 1000mm wide and 1200mm high:
What do people prefer, we are torn, be great to get some peoples thoughts as block work starts Tuesday so is decision time !

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoI feel like the window should be portrait and fill the space and the wall cupboard on the right should drop down to meet worktop, so the window is framed between the cabinets either side and the sink centred.

Comments (28)Snan, The bottom oval one in Eskandari's photos would also work in your room (or something like that). The oval shape visually gives height to the room which would work for you as well. I know that shopping around can sometimes be exhausting, but if you were up for the search that would be another option if you're not sure about the round one you have already. I would also look for something that combines the elements of your wallpaper as well as your fireplace (if you are not planning on changing it) in order to bring those together, i.e. try to bring in the color tones of the two....See MoreWhich frames for above the bed?
Comments (103)Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. Comments (10)I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. 2 years agoThanks for replies, the portrait idea has definitely put us in trouble ! My partner is insistent there is a window behind the sink, this is the view which we are going to improve with some flowers, etc :
There is a wall on right which limits how far we would want to go as it is only 900mm from window but this arrangement would mean just out of sight when looking straight on :
No idea how high from floor would go or how high, this picture gone 1010 from floor and windows 1m high with each panel 480 wide, I have to say I am starting to prefer it to the architects plan of the 900 wide single window 1200 high which leaves a lot of plain wall :
Mmmm food for thought, I really wish we hadn't left this so late !

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoWow, many thanks for all the comments, really good input. If we go wide then due to our limited workspace for toasters, kettles, water jugs etc then would have to raise sill otherwise everything would be poking up.
Had another go at what are becoming the 5 options !
Leaning towards top right of 4 picture shot, gives us the low sill with space either side although the wide with higher sill is tempting, was worried that bars would look out of place in handless kitchen we are looking at but then stumbled across the picture above, the architects one top left does look that tiny bit thin, damn I find these decisions difficult.

2 years agoMany thanks for all responses, never knew one window size took so much thought, been struggling with this one, been looking at loads of picture on internet and one thing we have now decided on is a low sill, so this leaves us 4 options:
1) Still kitchen designers and architects favorite which no one else seems to like !2) Same as 1) but with cupboards at 120 to make same as tall untis on right and by some fluke leaves same gap either side of window
3) Sink no longer centered and encompasses draining board and bit more
4) Same as 3) but tiny bit wider so gap both side of window to units is the same, window is now pretty hues at 1200 x 1200
Any further votes much appreciated as now we have taken high sill out of equation most peoples favorite has gone which is a bit of a concern.
