We’re replacing the patio and I’d like to create a shallow water feature laid into the patio with one or two stepping stones to cross the shallow water (see photo). Can you advise the steps to go about creating this idea. Any pros and cons to be mindful of would also be appreciated. Many thanks.
you'll need to build a solid edge under the slabs to form the pool so it doesn't move, if your lucky you might find a liner precast as what you want but if not you can use a flexible black pond liner sheet and lay it up over the edge, then sit the slabs onto of that edge with a good overhang; relatively simple but a few things to consider are the water will always be about 2 inches below the maximum level and you'll want to make sure if it does overflow it does so away from the patio where it will do less damage. Also with a shallow pond you will loose a lot of water through evaporation.
As above, put in a ring footing for the outer walls and some pad footings in where the stepping stones will be.
Build the outer walls with blockwork to the required depth of the pool and then install a box welded butyl liner. This will alleviate the need for unsightly folds in the corners and it is easier to set the paving on the edges, allow for a couple of centimetres overlap of the top paving.
Now build the blockwork on top of the liner for the stepping stones, again making sure the blockwork is slightly smaller than the slab dimensions as this helps make the stepping stones look like their floating. Paint the blockwork black under the stepping stones and this will make them less obvious.
