HELP! Pendant lights over Hob

Hi there, Im having 2 pendant lights over our peninsular/island but have just realised they are above the hob. Are there any restrictions with safety with this? Any particular kind of lights that are recommended or types of bulb? Was thinking if surrounded lights are better (ie a sphere with bulb inside) rather that open at the bottom
Looking forward to any help!!

I have lights in the extractor over my hob, so I guess it wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks Sarah. I'm wondering if those lights would have some special protection as part of the extractor?

Thanks for all the replies. I have the blind ordered so I cannot change this. However, if it were to be fitted to the outside frame of the window, it would be let down on top of the tap. I`m not planning on tiling, as we`ve recently repainted the kitchen. I am trying to attach some photos from this website to show examples of pelmets that may work. Is there a way to do this??

I think this is a really nice kitchen - you've done a nice job. The only thing that is throwing it off are the two different floors in dining and kitchen area. I'd like to see the same flooring continued through both areas. I think you'll be very pleased with the difference it makes. Since you do not like the wood or the tile, perhaps a porcelain 12x24 tile would work for you. It's very durable, so you wouldn't have to worry about the Newfies scratching it and very easy to maintain. You'd could opt for one of the wood grains on the market or one made to simulate stone. I think a greyish color would work well.

Oh wow! Thanks everyone... So so much... I would never have seen some of the things that you have pinpointed. I have already got the cabinet and under cabinet lighting, it was turned off when I took the earlier shots. I totally get the suggestion to remove the cabinets etc near the window but would prefer not too just yet... I am back pocketing that for next year! I will add some items on top of the cabinets, and the artwork that you suggested too in the meantime. The window seat I had in mind was for the living room area, instead of the two seater. Would that look better than the two piece, with colourful cushions, and if so should I add a built I cabinet for the tv (right beside it) in the same painted wood colour as the window seat? Also should I put curtains either side of the window seat if I opt to go with that, or stick just with colourful roman blinds? I will look into fixtures for lights and have already started the fabric hunt for curtains/roman blinds/ cushions etc. Also, what colour would you recommend to accessorise the room with?

No I don't think so. They're just 2 small halogen bulbs.

Anything dangling down above the hob will get covered in grease, so make sure the shades are made from something easily wipeable and heat resistant eg metal or ceramic.

Check the spec of the lights - it might be wise to avoid over the hob or at best use a rated lamp/light fitting that is capable of dealing with steam/vapour etc . Personally, I’d avoid putting anything over the hob.

Thanks so much guys. The hob is induction so luckily no actual flame but still of course steam gives off a lot of heat too. I'll defo look for the correct rates light fitting. Thanks so much

I wouldn’t put lights above the hob either. It’s troublesome enough to wipe an extractor fan.

Would you consider having a fancy extractor fan, which has lights incorporated and looks like a modern chandelier?

I have an extractor fan with lights. A lot easier to keep clean than having lights hanging over the hob that will be covered in grease or ruined by steam...
