Downstairs bath without shower

I don’t really understand why a shower would make it less luxurious? In my (limited) experience people tend to spend less time in downstairs bathrooms as it tends to be less private, quiet etc so you’re more likely to have a quick shower rather than a long “peaceful“ soak. Given you have young children I would have thought a bath upstairs would make more sense, if you have the space, although I appreciate children are showering younger.

Your point about noise and peacefulness is a good one, thank you, I will think on that aspect a bit more.

There is currently only a shower in this house, we've done 7 months so far and the kids are happy, it works for us absolutely fine. It's just me that misses the bath! And to be fair I was thinking I'm more likely to enjoy a peaceful soak in the bath after they're in bed and therefore downstairs would be better in terms of not waking them?

I think we've been stung as in both previous houses our shower screen door/curtain leaked, I appreciate we may have been unlucky but based on our own experience a shower over the bath has never worked out for us. There isn't room for separate bath and shower, either up or down stairs.

I ask on here because it does seem like an odd decision and we do keep questioning it. But sometimes unconventional leads to something lovely right?

Also, do you really need a bath in it? You could stick in a 1500mm shower along the right hand wall but back towards the door then a toilet and sink opposite each other under the window. Loads of natural light at the sink (could even be a double sink) and plenty of room to move around without it feeling too cramped.

I'll keep looking at this but at first glance if you are ok getting rid of the bathroom, it would make sense to incorporate into bedroom 2. I would make it smaller (does it need a bath?) And I would enlarge the hot press to allow for more storage of bed linen etc. For bedrooms 3 and 4 it seems hard to fit in an ensuite for b4 without impinging on b3. So my suggestion would be to take space off bedroom 3 and do a small ensuite along the wall where they meet. I know this makes both smaller but by taking the door of b out to the end of the stairs you could move the door of the ensuite to the wall where the sink currently is and that might give more space in the bedroom but it does look tight for a double!

We also bought our house before babies - but I can now tell you they usually are mainly in the tub yrs1-8 maybe even 10 or 11! We opted to put both a tub (with an electric shower) and a walk-in shower / wet room type arrangement in the main bathroom. Seems like a lot in 1 place but works for us.

Well it sounds as if it may work for you, at least for the next few years. I’m not sure how old your kids are but when they get older they can spend a lot of time in the shower which may not be fun in the mornings! It’s also worth considering guests as they tend to much prefer a quick shower than a bath in someone else’s house so something to consider if you plan on directing them to the downstairs room.

Maybe when the kids are older you can add an over bath shower? I assume (?!) it can just feed into the bath taps if you add an exposed shower although have no plumbing expertise! Although depending on the age of your children it may be ready for a refit anyway?

Indeed the mornings as the kids get older need to be considered, you are right. Hubby and I were both brought up in houses with only a single bathroom (and he's one of 6 kids!), the fact that we will have a second bathroom at all is a bonus, which is maybe why we aren't going going whole hog. I'm determined to make the downstairs bathroom feel like part of the house, not just a convenience, we'll be styling it identical to the upstairs to give a cohesive look, it will be accessed from bottom of stairs in the hallway so not through the kitchen which is something I wanted to avoid as I don't like the atmosphere that creates.

Thanks so much for your opinions and thoughts, it's so useful to chat it through. The bath downstairs will have one end against a stud as there will be storage cupboard at that end so perhaps we should consider leaving plumbing available in this stud wall? For a future shower installation if we come to our senses in years to come? What do you think?

😳 that must have been tricky in your husbands house! Since getting a dog we’ve stayed in a few cottages with bathrooms off of the kitchen which isn’t ideal although worse when you need to get back upstairs just wearing one of their “bath” towels 😂

That sounds a great idea to conceal the plumbing, maybe get a few extra tiles too (if needed)?

Thanks Minnie101, its been good to chat. We're having a kitchen extension too so just loads of stuff to think about and sometimes I think I'm making crazy decisions because I'm overwhelmed with choices.

I'm definitely taking on board the things you have said. :-)

Our main bathroom is downstairs with just a bath (was a bungalow) until we converted the loft and we now have 2 en-suites upstairs with showers so not quite the same situation as yours but we also puzzled for a while about whether to have a shower downstairs with the bath. I def didn’t want a shower over our free-standing bath & we could have put a separate shower in but it would have been a squeeze & ruined the ‘spa’ look that we wanted to try to achieve. So we decided to have a just the bath downstairs but do have a shower head on the taps which is useful for hair washing. We have 2 teenage ch who each have an en-suite with shower but to be honest they prefer to shower in the evening anyway so mornings aren’t a problem for us. To be honest, I’m sure most people over a certain age grew up in one bathroom homes & we all managed fine. Do what’s right for you (although I agree having extra plumbing built in to future proof your house might be useful). Good luck.

Thank you so much for your comment. So good to hear from someone with similar thinking. You do have the advantage of more than one shower upstairs but I like how you describe the 'spa' feel of downstairs bath only....that's what I'm aiming for. Thanks for the reassurance.
