Awkward Extension off the Kitchen
I have a kitchen with 4 doors (Hallway, under stairs cupboard, garage & playroom) feels more like a corridor. It is small 2.35m x 3.6m that I need to cook and feed a family of 4, currently one of us has to eat standing up. The playroom off the kitchen (15cm step down to playroom) and under used. It is basically a toy and craft store room as the kids prefer to be in the main livingroom. How can I use this space better and make it feel more connected? I only have budget and diy skills for cosmetic changes, I could stretch if it would make a huge difference. Let me know your thoughts 😀

Comments (28)Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoYep, was my first thought too: as the playroom is an unused space really, apart from storing stuff, put a dining table into there, It can double up as a craft space, toys could move to the kids' rooms. I'd probably take out the door and door frame, so it feels more like it's part of the kitchen.
Also, and I realise that this sounds harsh, you don't have to display everything the kids create. It only adds to the cluttered feel, which really isn't good for one's peace of mind I think. I would create a gallery wall somewhere with the best artwork framed. Makes it more important and it will look better too.
Maybe the room is wide enough to put storage along one long wall. If not, it might work if you put a dining bench (could double up as storage too, I've seen some great Ikea hacks) along one wall.
I'd remove the wallpaper border in the kitchen and paint the walls. Or go for a nice wallpaper. You could carry colours through into the dining/craft room I would also change the ceiling light in both rooms and add some under cabinet lighting in the kitchen. There are some great LED options available.
