Open fire in bedroom.

Hello everyone! Newbie here so go easy.

We have a Victorian cottage it was built in 1877. The previous owners have really done a number on the house and we’re trying to restore the house back to how it should be.

Can anyone help me with a few questions I have regarding bedroom fireplaces? We’d like to get some cast iron inserts from salvage yards etc.

- How do I measure said fire for insert?

- what’s with the stone square around the fire? Is it some sort of lintel?

- best way to go about restoring?

There's another option--electric. If you don't need the heat, then electric might be a good solution. They've come a long way since they were first introduced. I hadn't spotted it was mahogany tbh when I first looked! I probably wouldn't go for a light wood with the mahogany, perhaps something medium in tone rather than mahogany just to balance out with the rest of the room? You could of course go for a different material for the console and add wood for accessories. For the bookcases I might actually paint them in the ŵall colour or the White otherwise they might overpower that area and the fire? Another option is to paint the actual fire surround. If you decided on blue for an accent colour for example you could paint it an Inky blue. It's quite hard to say without knowing what/if you'll bring colour to the rest of the room as you could end up with a living area dark in tone and everything else very light. The bookcases will also visually widen the living space so you may find you also need side tables for the sofa to balance it (or a chair angled in front of the bookcase if it fits) but perhaps see how it looks first before making any decisions! Art or mirror over the fire would work but I think art for colour/pattern.

Thank you for this and for attaching the photo to demonstrate! Lovely idea and would be ideal in the room. I’m not sure what you mean by extending the curtains? I was wondering about adding a recessed curtain rail and having it in an L shape to fit the other window too. Or maybe curtains on the large window and a Roman blind on the smaller one? Does my bedroom ensuite require a fire door?

I currently have a third floor apartment. Inside my bedroom there is a bathroom ensuite. My bedroom door is a 30 minute Fire Door although I am not sure if the bathroon ensuite within my bedroom is a fire door or is required to be. To improve swing space I was considering removing the ensuite door and replacing with a sliding barn door but would only consider this if the ensuite does not require a fire door. Appreciate any advice.
