Living room styling - rugs - cushions - finishing touches please!

A long time coming and some fantastic help on here...thank you.

We are working through the house, room by room on a very blank canvas.

We have the Harrington corner sofas in dark grey, but definitely with a blue hue ( not silver grey). Walks are Little Green inbox.

Floors are wide oak boards.

Log burner and wood shelf are black. Wicker log basket.

Round mid century table in place (Love it for style and practicality)

I’m struggling with finishing the room off.

Still to buy are:

rugs for under two sofas

an occasional chair (possibly vintage and swivel)

cushions

throws

...to tie it all together.

Just can’t decide, one minute calm and plain (too boring?); patterns and textures ( too busy?)

I’m worried about...

the sofa being too ‘blue’ against anything grey/silver - so have looked at black/natural/cream/white or multi coloured. Not sure if I am ready to commit to a colour as I still want to buy the Vintage occasional chair.

I very much like ‘Dutch’ styling and can spend hours on their equivalent of Rightmove...😂

I prefer wool/natural rugs and not polypropylene.

These are ideas from Dunhelm and made.

Any help would really be appreciated.

The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Chair rail is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and would be wonderful compliment to your existing beautiful trim.

Is the chandelier thing seeming a bit small for the room or is it just me? Given that your walls are plain, the sofa is plain how about a patterned rug? Do you like Persian rugs? I find that dark green wainscotting too heavy and would paint it a lighter color. Given you have just moved in I assume you are planning to be there a while. If you like traditional style do you want a fairly safe color scheme re walls and curtains, keeping future resale in mind. Or are u happy to decorate according to your tastes? The mirror seems a bit small to me.

Hi Lisa, nice sofa. I had a red sofa for 10 years and loved it ( though mine was fabric) I've changed the kitchen/ living room and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I gave in and put in a grey leather sectional one and I must say it's much easier to decorate around. Are you in Ireland? Have you heard of the 1933 company, they have very nice suites. Red makes a big statement! Just my 2 cents worth, good luck!

I think I’d choose some art and the vintage chair first and then you can add colour accordingly for your cushions and rug.

It looks a lovely room but just wondering if you could pull the sofa forward to make the seating area cosier for conversation and therefore just have one rug? Is the tv also at a comfortable viewing height?

Hi Minnie,

TV is work in progress...blame the OH, we can never agree! The unit is awaiting the sale room reopening though. Wall mounted or tv media unit will be needed.

When I first planned the room with help on here, there was the suggestion of a unit to run under the tv and under the window. It looked fab.

The sofa can’t move forward as there is a door which it would block. It isn’t really a problem as their are usually just the two of us, if we have visitors we are either in another room or position ourselves on the sofas to chat. The occasional chair is useful for being able to see others and we do move that around or sit it out of the corner.

We have some art, black framed but black and white. The vintage chair is proving elusive but could be yet another neutral! With all of this you can see my definite reluctance to commit to a colour scheme. I suppose that’s where the idea of black and neutral rugs came from.

Any suggestions welcome. Relieve my indecision!😂

If you are on Instagram, check out fundamakeovers. It's about homes that went onto the market and came back within a year after a makeover. You might like it. Trend is herringbone floors and black window frames and steel doors, but still... there are some drool-worthy ones.

The circular rug is a great idea, perhaps some similar black and neutral cushions for now, then add more when I decide on a colour, or when the vintage chair dictates.

I wondered about the crittal style mirrors above the corner sofa.

Funda Makeovers ❤️💙❤ the stuff of dreams @Carolina. I love that styling. There is something very simple yet very clever. I find it really hard to emulate without it looking boring and unfinished, yet I love it for that simple uncluttered vibe. Maybe it is about the proportions of their rooms, I can’t put my finger on it?

I think that we (I'm Dutch) tend to hang art instead of mirrors on our living room walls. Or wall hangings, things made of natural materials like rattan and wool, something with texture. And if we hang mirrors, we do that for their interesting frame, more than for the mirror.
