Living room (sunken?) redesign and advice!

Hi,
First off - everything in this room is being ripped out and replaced (most likely).
We are currently renovating our house and next up is the living room... it's a cool space, but also has its quirks. Mainly being the staircase required to enter.
So far we think we'll probably try and expose the joists in the ceiling to for more of an effect, but apart from that we are really struggling to picture how we could redesign this room to work better. Our current plan was to essentially leave the layout as it sort of is at the moment, with a big feature wall where the TV is (feel free to pick your favourite paint colour..!) with a corner sofa.
Does anyone have any ideas regarding the staircase / ceiling / layout that may work? Honestly happy for any input whatsoever whether it be professional or personal.
