Adjoining fence ideas

Neighbour has erected a fence infront of the adjoining one and is quite unsightly with it coming over the top.
Apart from giving it a lick of paint, I'm looking for ideas how I can make this look better and even have the panels of an even height on my side? initial idea was to add trellis'.
The garden does naturally slope but looking for ideas to make it a better staged decline without replacing the panels itself. Any suggestions would be so helpful.

Can I be truthful? Your neighbours fence looks tidy and smart, well the bit I can see anyway. Is it trellis or an actual fence? If it’s a fence then I would consider removing your fence and take advantage of their fence.

of course! They built a fence infront on this green one which was the original partition 'wall'. I won't post a photo of the actual 'tidiness' of the wooden posts but will say it looks better in the photo that it actually is in person, (hence why I am looking for ideas to cover it or make it look neat on my side).

Not sure removing this fence is an option as it will leave gaping holes and defeat the point of privacy, plus, I don't think it's my responsibility to remove this one at my expense. I was thinking if it was possible to add trellises to the top of this or something?

Considering building a wall (no pun intended) along the left and right sides of the garden in this photo Left side Right side A similar type of brick to the ones used here The overall objective is brighten up the garden without trying to make it look too flashy. On the left side I'd like to plant Portuguese laurel for privacy and prevent overlooking from the adjoining property. A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

Hi all, Looking for a few ideas on what to plant in different areas of a small garden. The first photo shows the front, the bed near the window gets a lot of sun in both winter and summer. I did plant wild flower seeds here last September but it was a bit late so only have the below. As it gets the sun I would like to plant flowers that would attract bees........any ideas? Also looking to plant 2 or 3 plants down the side of the fence........what would be recommendations? The bed by the wall doesn't really any sun during the winter and a bit in the summer. Was thinking the tree as there and adding a cherry blossom in the middle or maybe a bit closer to the gate. Good idea? The second photo shows the back, the plan was/is to put decking over half the grass and plants in the bed. What would you recommend for this bed? It gets no sunshine in winter but gets a lot from end of April to start of Sept. The third one shows another bed at the back that again only gets sunshine in the summer. Again what would be the recommendation here? And finally looking for somewhere in Ireland I can buy all of the recommendations online?? Loads of questions for any budding landscaper!! :-)

It is quite unusual to erect a fence in front of a fence, but people do funny things sometimes. Trellis sounds good. It’s such an attractive addition to the top of a fence. I’m not sure how you would attach it as normally it is attached to the fence posts and yours look like concrete and aren’t tall enough to slot the trellis onto? However, there is trellis that concertinas out which could be nailed to the fence rather than the posts (See 2nd pic below). Last idea is to add large trellis to the front of your fence with its own posts (see pic 3).

It looks like they've put up. better, neater fence do I'd consider removing the one on your side to get the benefit.

You say it's not your responsibility? Is it your fence? If not, they are no longer wanting it since it's been replaced by their own one. You can do what you want then?

another honest opinion.....

the green fence looks awful to my eye, I'm not surprised they've covered it with something better looking (even if not perfect it still looks like an improvemrnt). it may be that they also hold the belief that it is not their fence and therefore couldn't remove it?).

if their new fence is a full fence I would just pull down the green and enjoy the better fence that you've not paid for. ripping things out doesn't cost anything but time and effort.

Who's border is it? I had my fence replaced a few years ago and next door decided she didn't like it because I got the nice side. Hey, my border, my fence, why shouldn't I have the nice side? So she had the same fence put up on her side of my fence (even had the cheek to ask if I'd pay for it)!

We have a lovely fence one side and at the back of our property which was erected a couple of years ago. I painted the fence adjoining us and next door (the other side) then they decided to take it down and replace it. I have to admit I was a bit peeved because it had only just been painted but was even more annoyed when they replaced it with the cheapest rubbish on the market. We have also considered putting a fence to match the other side in front of it to make it look decent.

I‘m not sure if there’s a height restriction when adding trellis.

I would take the green fence down.

I must admit my first instinct was that the green fence looks terrible BUT, actually, it really just needs painting and the changes in height need dealing with. I’m a fan of very dark coloured fences, black or very dark brown. I’d also add some trellis over the top half to third of the fence to disguise the height changes, something like Sonia’s third photo. Or you could just do what everyone else said - take it down and enjoy the new fence. I suspect your original fence gives more privacy though?

It’s horrible and saggy. We have a very similar 23 metres of a very saggy fence that belongs to the neighbours. They have put smart balck trellis on their side, which made it look better.
Last spring I painted our side and though it looks neater the panels sag in the middle of the panel and look pretty horrid. The nice dark colour of my side of the fence actually accentuates its unevenness They are not in the position to replace it at the moment so we are putting five full length panels in front of the fence so that we don’t see the “waves”. The initial idea was to grow star jasmine, clematis so that it gets covered but it will take too long to grow to cover the fence. The rest of the wall would hopefully get hidden by clumping bamboo and evergreen shrubs.
