Horrific Kitchen Colour... What to do?

Hey,

Hope everyone is having a lovely Bank Holiday weekend so far, mine was going great until I received a photo.... So, I’m hoping to get some advice when it comes to dealing with a horrible coloured kitchen (aka, my next new kitchen in a rented property).

I just even can’t begging to think... why.... just why.... who would pick something so horrific knowing that the tenants aren’t allowed to change it....

Is there anything I can do to soften the blow, make it “nice” or even just acceptable?

You don’t like the blue fascias on the kitchen units? Is that what you’re referring to?

Blue and green are becoming very popular. I could live with it but everyone is different. It’s a modern colour.

I also think it’s fine. It wouldn’t be my personal choice but I don’t think it’s ‘horrific’. I think once you get appliances in & maybe a blind or a plant or two, it will be fine. It just looks a little stark without any personal effects.

I love the English mist as it is more appealing to me. It has an organic appeal plus good energy in a room that gets a lot of action. It looks very rich and saturated color!

I think the flatness of the cabinets and the prominent grain of oak don't necessarily work well given the disparity in color. I would suggest a warmer wood like walnut that has some tans and darks blended, and a softer grain that would work well with the cabinetry.

The protruding wall around the fireplace needs to be wallpapered or painted with dense motifs or tiled with stone/brick textured tiles or ply. Re-doing your fireplace will drastically change the look of your living room. See photos below. Consider painting the frames of your doors and sliding doors in the living room and kitchen a dark brown to match the floating shelf over the fireplace. Do not decide what you want to do in poor lighting as you have provided in the photos. Wine is a good color to consider. Also think of darker colors like plum and have different shades on each wall (from the same color family). So maybe think of wine- plum- magenta or wine - oxblood-blood red, etc. whichever suits your taste.

This is a very small and dark kitchen I would defo change the colour of the units to an antique cream and the worktop a darker colour maybe walnut and paint those double doors and the window sill white to match the other wood work also get a smaller round table it would give you more floor space the chairs you have would still work and maybe add some splashes of acidy colours lime green/orange or yellows not too much just a few touches. also Jacksplash is correct about the blind if you are keeping a blind go for a straight edge one. if your budget allows I would also change the sink to a white sink it really reflex light from the window and brightens the room I did something the same with my own sink it doesn't have to be a Belfast sink you can get the same sink as you already have in white ceramic.

So if you’re not allowed to change it would it be possible to just swap the doors for a colour you like and then keep the ones that are already on the carcases so that if you leave you could just swap the doors back over?

I guess it depends on how many doors there are but it is an option.

Maybe a sticky protective film is still to be removed, I know some kitchens are like that!

It’s always difficult to tell colours on a photo..... reserve judgement until you see it in the room.

If you then still don’t like it work out what you don’t like.... there will be different solutions to different problems and it will be that different wall colours, lighting or accessories will make a difference.

So it’s the blue units you don’t like? Looks okay to me and you could do a “New England” makeover with blue and white striped blinds, lots of warm wicker and wood and tiny touches of red. I’ve seen a lot worse.

You made me laugh.
While it was a rhetorical question, let me tell you that we are planning a kitchen reno and a silvery blue kitchen units are on the top of my list of colours so far 🤣

I have a huge box full of F&B testers, but keep returning back to a blue kitchen. What can I say? I blame cultural differences 😎

Meanwhile, if you hate the blue in interior so much, it might be helpful to ignore it while introducing other colours in the decor.

🌝 Don't panic just yet..... there are worse decors you could be dealing with! Sonia's pics feature wood in combination with blue.... Try working on that theme with your utensils, chopping boards - I have actually seen a kettle and toaster range with wood accents that you could try for. Some stronger blue tea towels, and if you have room wood stools or table and chairs. It doesn't have to be all cottagey, it could be a modern glass top with wood legs. Oh, yes could look very smart!
