what size and shape, style rug??

Hi I bought a very nice low, big modular sofa (length 270cm) here but realize they are bit big for my living room.

But I want to keep them. Currently I put a 170 x 240 rug under the sofa but it looks oddly small and big at the same time!

I want to change the rug but unsure whether I should get a bigger one covering the entire sofa or a smaller one just for the coffee table?
Also if I should get a round one or rectangular one...help needed!

I have all walnut dark brown dining table and tv stand close to the sofa area and there is a jute rug under the dining table.. so it is a co dining+living room area.

Bit unsure what design rug to get...abstract or just beige/ivory simple one??

I like your blue rug near the sofa, but I think it would look a little better if it was pulled out a little more, that is looking at it in the picture, pull it a little more out from under the short end of the sofa. Hope this makes sense? There are guides on how to place a rug and this is one that may help.

I think it's lovely. It's just that the room looks a bit bare just now so the big rug and sofa are all you see. Finish the room, plants, coffee table, lamps then it'll all come together

Do you plan on painting your walls? I hope so. If yes than could also change your plan later. Be sure to look at the entire room before deciding how to decorate just one wall. I would consider a greige tone on the walls. As you have natural wood baseboards..(I like them), I would add tall shelves, the color of your trim to each of the alcoves. The bottom of the alcoves could be closed cabinets. Your TV could sit on one of them. Leave the backs of the shelves open for the paint to show through. You could display other art (including paintings) on them as well as books, photos, etc. I would not put a mantle above the fireplace as it looks more contemporary to be a clean look. I would place a very large framed round mirror over the fireplace, or a very tall vertical one, If every mirror were to only reflect a great view..there would be very few of them anywhere.

Love your carpet choices here! I noticed that there no artwork on the walls yet. This will elevate the mood of the room since you will need an upper emphasis once your room is anchored with the carpet. It is easier to decorate around a rug, the one you love for sure, than around a focal piece, such as art. After you choose from any of the beautiful carpets above that work with your interior, take a photo of the room with the carpet installed in it. Have fun looking for the artwork that best sings with your carpet. and that grabs you. After you have the choice of art up on the wall, look for small accessories of colour of shape, size and texture that work with the whole composition last. Do not forget something living such as plants, which take the sterility out of the room, especially neutral walls and natural floors.

Hi Lisa, nice sofa. I had a red sofa for 10 years and loved it ( though mine was fabric) I've changed the kitchen/ living room and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I gave in and put in a grey leather sectional one and I must say it's much easier to decorate around. Are you in Ireland? Have you heard of the 1933 company, they have very nice suites. Red makes a big statement! Just my 2 cents worth, good luck!

Your room looks large and lovely but with an entrance at one end and a fireplace at the other can seem a bit long. Firstly take EVERYTHING out. This will show the room in the best advantage and get rid of clutter. Only put back things you absolutely love. I would put two sofas or a sofa and two chairs (they don't have to be a suite) in front of the fireplace OR get a solid coloured L shaped sofa as it seems you are orienting the room toward the TV. You could then put a nice rug under a light-feeling coffee table (maybe glass and wood to pick up your chimney breast) in the middle. This would allow you to get rid of the multiple small side tables. I would lighten up the alcoves alongside the fireplace, either paint or light wallpaper. Get a proper piece of furniture for the TV to stand on. TV stands are ugly. There's lots to choose from. Try IKEA. Take down the heavy curtains and put in Roman blinds in a print fabric you love (try to find one with at least 3 colours) and coordinate with your rug. You could then use colours in this to make/pick throws and pillows. At the end near the door you could put in a small table and your rocking chair and make it like a separate area for music or reading with a nice standing lamp. Get some inexpensive drum light shades to update the lighting and put in another standing lamp by your sofa, as mentioned above, and lower your pictures to eye height. Good luck!

Hi, I love the sofa. I think it's the perfect size. You could do what Sonia suggests; pull the rug away from the window wall a bit, so all front legs of the sofa are on the rug. Or... you could go for a round rug. Controversial, I know, but it works so well with a corner sofa. I think you'd need at least 200cm. And I'd have two or three small round tables, maybe all different ones.

And, sorry, but I don't think the rug under the dining table works, so I'd remove that.

Oh, just had a thought; you could layer the rugs, so put the dining area rug on top of the blue rug.

Such great ideas! Thank you I will first try to pull out the rug and then decorate other bits more, and if it doesn’t work out, will try a round rug, actually looks super good in that picture...
