house frontage design

I’m extending the first floor of my house, to pull out the first floor and ‘square off’ the house. The new roof will go across the entire first floor to make it look more like a traditional 1930s style house rather than a chalet. I’m really struggling on how I can make the front look more aesthetically pleasing. I’ve attached a photo of current front of house, and the proposed front and rear drawings. Any ideas welcome... thanks in advance and Happy Easter!

Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Are you needing a driveway for a car? Would you like a garden? No gardening expert at all so I tend to look at what neighbours have done, especially if the same house style, and then use them for inspiration. Quick fix would be to power wash then add containers also low cost. More expensive is to re lay flags or tile and add a garden something like

Need to keep drive and right now I’m more interested in how I can improve the design and look of the house itself rather than the drive/front garden etc

The neighbour seems quite content with the old windows and clay 'shingles' (sorry, I'm not english, don't know what they should be called), otherwise I'd suggest replacing the shingles on the soffit. The cream and brick are peculiar, but really go well with the period house.

I assume the extension will be done in similar red brick?

What parts of the exterior puts you off mostly?

As I think the front can be spruced up by a more happy (white?) fence and driveway.

Can you afford new windows at the front ? The leaded windows are a bit dated.

I would maybe paint the shingles below the bay so that you don't have so many red shades.

If you pressure wash the drive and paint the gates that would also be a good start. Add a new house number with a new light above it and add some planters so that you have some green at the front too.

I'm presuming the garage is yours ? Maybe paint the garage door the same colour as the shingles to tie it all in.
