Living Room - Games Console Dilemma
Hey,
I recently made a post asking for some advice around potential living area layouts for my new home (https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/6096958/living-area-layout-help-advice). One thing that has since become apparent is that almost no furniture seems to be designed to accommodate modern games consoles.
The Xbox Series S//X isn’t too much of a problem with its more compact and traditional type shape but the PlayStation 5 is a total nightmare, the awkward shape, that it’s horrendously ugly and is simply HUGE make it impossible to find any furniture that can accommodate it.

Has anyone else been able to overcome this and find a solution to the modern gaming console storage dilemma (I’m trying to avoid that student / dormitory / man cave type look and want to have it out-of-sight so not to clutter and detract from the living space (sorry to anyone that likes the design, but to me it’s a monstrosity!).

Comments (14)What an awkward space! The door opens into the room where the hearth juts out, making it even narrower. In an ideal world I would want to make the fireplace smaller (a flat hole in the wall with no hearth) and change the door to open outwards. However I'm guessing they may not be options! You need the room to work in 2 ways, one as a cosy space for the adults in the evening and the other as a larger clear space for the kids during the day, a tough call! I would consider dividing the room into 2 defined areas, one for kids and one for adults. The adult space should be at the window end and mean moving the TV to the other side of the fireplace. The sofa could go under the end window and 2 chairs either side. This will be a tight fit, would you consider buying a new L shaped one in a more compact design? This could sit by the radiator with a chair opposite. A rug and coffee table would further define this space and make it feel cosy. At the other end, you could place your toy storage behind the door, (maybe invest in some more!) and then bean bags could give the kids some seating for watching TV and playing games. The TV being freestanding could swivel according to day/night position. I hope that gives you some ideas, I'll try to find some photos to illustrate what I mean! Comments (27)No, ask away :-) I'm not a pro though, just kind of passionate about design and interiors and all that :-) Great cabinet. I'm really not opposed to mixing metals. You'll get a more eclectic mix. It is the result of going with what you love and not with what you think goes with something else. And that will give your interior your own personal style. Matter of taste. Some people really don't like it. Others do :-) Go for a fairly large coffee table. I would think at least 100 cm wide. Tape (news) paper together to the size of the coffee table you like and lay that on the floor. It will give you an idea about the scale in your room. You need it to be easily reachable from the sofas, since you have these high armrests. And your room can take a large table. If you can't find a large one you like, you can also think about putting together 4 smaller square ones for example. The one with the metal base (I took two from the Soul Lifestyle site) is on the smallish side. The black one is larger. Round fits nicely with the shape of your sofas. Not sure if I mocked up the sizes correctly, but I think the lovely side table is too small. The lamp is about 70 cm tall (again, I guestimated the size), but it does look small on that low table. Comments (4)A window seat would be great for storage. I would also add tall storage (in gloss white to reflect light) on either the TV wall or presumably you have an empty back wall at the moment. Maybe add a giant colourful world map mural over the sofa? Definitely add a rug. A coffee table would be good for the younger child to use for crafts etc. You could try one of the mid-century designs that are around at the moment with the painted legs so it suits both age groups. Maybe paint the desk in a brighter colour for the older child to use? Choose a paint with a satin finish rather than matt. A mirror will also help with the light. Comments (28)Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. 3 years agoWhat about a storage footstool? You can put all that sort of stuff in it, use it as a coffee table and put your feet up on it at the end of a hard days gaming 😊. I love mine. This sort of thing

I ended up settling on a sideboard from Furniture Village as it was the only thing I could find which met my requirements (big enough for the PS5, not dwarfed by my 65” TV above it and tall enough to hide the radiator when sat on the couch);

I’ve had to modify the unit to allow more airflow to the PS5 by cutting out the backboard and adding a metal mesh panel (this works great! although everyone might not be happy cutting up their new £1900 unit), this is definitely something to considder as without the additional airflow the PS5 fans would ramp-up pretty fast (although not PS4 fast) and the section of the unit where it’s store would become obviously hot.
There are a few photos below but the quality isnt great as I've taken them on my iPad (the sideboard is usually square in the room but has been moved to accommodate the Christmas tree);
