Garden patio design ideas

Need help to decide on patio type and desine for our more or so square garden.
We have an old patio, which I want to change. The problem is, we have two levels of patio and a pond that we want to get rid off. I was thinking of few options:
1. To have a high ground patio extending into the pond area and lower one extend a bit more to the garden and to get rid of flower bed by the house wall.. keep the steps from both doors (kitchen and lounge)
2. To have only low level patio extended to about pond area and have the garden grass higher then the patio.
I am just trying to work out which is less expensive and better option to do with the drainage. Our garden is slanted towards the house.. so I am just not sure of which options and why would be better. I do not like the idea of having drainage by the house.. I would like more of a natural drainage system rather then installing guttering.. what would be your recommendations and why?.. just looking for ideas outside the box ☺ Thank you so much

It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Masmccar76 put these photos on because she thought people would like to see a genuinely lovely transformation of her garden. Instead there have been some downright nasty comments. By all means make comments but keep them constructive. Houzz is all about is sharing ideas, not about being nasty

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

Great- a photo. How about deciding if you want seating, dining, play space, or a combination, and then work out where each function makes the most sense. You could to a lot with plants, including large trees, in pots to soften the area and to screen one area from another, or could pull up some of the pavers to make planting spaces directly into the ground. Sketch out what you might want to use the space for and where you need it, and it will come together pretty quickly. Your local nursery can be an excellent resource.

Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!

That’s better! I can see most of the garden now. I’m no designer but the two levels of the garden are actually not too differing in height, if you lifted all the paving you are almost at the same level, which is good. Are you going to use a landscaper? They will easily dig out, and level the ground for you.

There are so many different types of paving you can use. Indian Sandstone is very popular and you can choose a riven rustic finish for a country look, or sawn Sandstone which is flatter and has a more modern look. Or there is outdoor grade porcelain which gives a modern vibe. They come is different shades of grey or buff. Some people use clay pavers which create a cottage look.

A good landscaper will ensure the patio slopes very gently away from the house. I have a drainage grill near my house, but you could just fill that same gap near the house with gravel. Below is the grill on my patio and then some pictures of different paving. I have both porcelain and sandstone in different parts of the garden.

Looks really nice the way you've done it. We had one person to come for a qoute, but just want to be sure the cons and pro's before doing anything and also what would work best for us in terms of style, design and budget.. 😊 thank you for sharing your thoughts and advice 👍
