Double alcove help!
We are currently decorating our 1930s open plan living/kitchen/diner and this alcove is so awkward! one alcove has a small tv and the other (the other side by the back door) has a record player. They have matching Ivar cabinets with brass legs and are painted green. I would love more space for books and have toyed with the idea of some sort of built in seating. I thought of moving the dining table but that was a no no from my husband! Happy to remove or keep wall lights. Advice much appreciated. Should also add we have two pre school boys so cocktail cabinets and glass aren’t sure fire winners alas! Thank you

Comments (7)I feel in a situation like this, I would not add windows with no view that would probably end up with some type of coverings a great deal of the time. My situation would be use of mirrors to reflect available light back into room. Mirror could be styled to look like Windows etc. we have a similar situation in our kitchen, and we mirrored over the sink, and created two faux windows using mirror and drapery side pannels. The effect works great, and when you add the right lighting the effect is wonderful, day and night. Comments (11)I think you're right to change your plans tbh, I think pic 1 and 3 would work. Another option is a suspended woodburner. It's obviously not a divide but it gives you the break in the ceiling so acts as one. The first one attached is from fireplaceproductsUK. The other 2 are just images from leotrippi and homedesignht to show how they can act to divide a room. A much more expensive option is a glass fireplace, this is from acucraft fireplaces. I'm not sure how easy it is to find UK manufacturers/suppliers though. Alternatively you can just break the room with furniture layout and ceiling lights. The lights if hung properly ie at differing heights, clusters etc along with floor lamps will stop that cavernous feel. Comments (17)You can paint the inside of FP opening charcoal and then I would go for a blue/grey and not greige. Those colors tend to be very dark. You have black furnishings and a blue/grey would look very fresh. Your art above FP has blue in it, so replace rug and get some pillows for sofa that will bring in the colors of the painting. Why not just put in some shelves, one big enough to hold tv. That would give a more open concept to room. If you need one enclosed to store components, that would fit also. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoWhat about a good old fashioned sideboard? You can go vintage mid century (loads for sale online) with the record player on top, and then lots of storage below, country pine or a painted one. The picture only shows one tiny bit of your room so rather difficult to advise. By the way I moved my dining table from my cramped kitchen to the living room within a bay window - best thing we ever did! So show us your layout and we‘d love to advise.
