Should I try to pull up carpet on my own?

I'm having a built-in wardrobe installed in a carpeted room. The joiners want to install on top of the carpet, but I would prefer to have them install on the underflooring. It seems the best thing to do is pull the edge of the carpet back (it's just a straight line, the wardrobes will run from wall to wall), and then call a professional to re-lay the edge of the carpet and cut it once the wardrobes are in. It sounds simple enough, but I have ZERO experience pulling up carpet - is this something I should do myself? If so, how?

Also, I've heard both sides of the build-on-the-carpet/remove-the-carpet debate... but if anyone wants to throw me an opinion, please do because part of me wants an excuse to leave the carpet where it is...
