Help with colour scheme in small boat bedroom

Hi all,

I live on a boat and am looking for some design help with re. the paint scheme for my small boat bedroom.

The bedroom is in the bow of the boat and due to the bed being above the water tank it is raised. There are drawers under the bed and rolling storage too. Either side of the bed are 'triangles', currently clad in pine tongue and groove. The room is lit by two portholes to the left and right and there is a bow hatch.

We've chosen one colour - a mid-dark grey-blue, which is currently on the bow doors and drawers. The dilemma comes with the other complimentary colours (which ones? We are thinking a warm pink/white and light grey) and how we use them.

I would like to paint all the wood, apart from the dark wood surrounding the door, but I just don't know how many colours to use, what to accent etc. Do we also stick to the classic of painting our ceiling and architrave white and then the walls another colour or paint the ceiling and walls the same colour?

Any help much appreciated!

I think I’d do the whole bed frame in the blue (which looks more green on my screen!) and literally the rest in a pale pink, including ceiling and the wardrobe (?) by the door.

Excuse the bad paint job and a warm pink didn’t exist so was just to give an idea! You could just go a warm white for everything and then add the pink for cushions as an alternative too

My instintive reaction is to go with the warm white to blend the surfaces together, pickup the tones of the draw color in your bed linen. Some soft texture in rugs next to the bed.

Thanks Chemayne, yes, that is correct re: position of the bed. There is a small bedroom behind where the bed is currently and ultimately i'd like to turn it into a walk in robe. That's funny, i never considered the grey bed to be masculine, although my mum didn't like it so maybe that should have been a clue! I keep coming back to it though, but not too sure if it is too low for the room. Unfortunatley there doesn't seem to be many grey beds around to compare it with. As for those pictures, thank you. However i don't think any of them are my taste. They are all a bit busy i think. I like the white trim which i am going to get done. I think from these i'm leaing towards Ighter coloured walls as well. I think the blue walls on number 1 is a bit much and no:4 with different curtains would be okish too.

Hi Louise, In a room like this I always like to keep the walls and ceilings ( including the small door and frame 1 colour...in this case a lavender. I'd start by finding colour chips that have the same colour as the carpet, and then go a few shades lighter but in the same tome. All baseboards and door to hall should be the same colour as the iron beds...off white. With the walls a colour you'll be able to see the pretty pattern of the frame. OR find a small scaled pattern of any of the shades of purple and the cream same as the bed frame) with the same fabric. Make custom bedding to match. In a small room 1 pattern works well everywhere. If you go the paint route, try to find fabric with soft gold, lavender, purple for a skirted table between the beds if there's room. You can put it on a cardboard table and base...found in some fabric or craft stores. Top it with a thin piece of glass ( Pier 1) and away you go.Don't be afraid of colour or small pattern in a small space, as you are going for the impact. Have fun! Shaila

Hi Orla. I've looked at your ideabook and assume you're happy to stick with the monotone look? I'd look at papering the ŵall behind the bed in Cole and son library panel wallpaper in midnight (pic will follow but it would also look good in a light shade!). The rest of the walls I'd do in a pale but warm grey. Which way does the room face in terms of lights? Go for black bedside cabinets but maybe something with curved lines or round handles against the bed. Either glass bedside lamps with white shades or in a warm metal or pendants hung low over the bedsides, Stick to white bed linen but add a charcoal throw with lots of texture. Choose cushions with different texture and patterns from White through to charcoal. Depending on what flooring you have you could also add a grey textured rug under the bed. I'd go for plain pale-mid grey curtains. If you have the space/budget a patterned black/grey and white chair would look great. I think the key thing is texture for interest so maybe also a large antiqued mirror, a chandelier with a silk drum shade, white flowers etc.

I would paint the ceiling and walls the same, then go with the blue grey below. it could be the palest pink, off white, pale blue. I don’t think any more colours would be a good idea, but as suggested you can add more with bedding, cushions and art. Here’s a couple of pics I found of boat decor. Not all bedrooms, but I’m looking more at the colour combinations. Especially love the first one.

I think the blue and natural wood looks lovely. And my advice would be to paint the walls (and doors+trim in the back) around the bed the same blue as the drawer fronts. Pick RAL9010 or even a tad bit warmer white for the ceiling.
