Design Dilemma Gardens

Help! Design needed for a triangle garden.

I have a triangle shaped s/w facing small garden, mainly laid to grass on thick clay soil. The house is built off two angles with the garage offset into the garden too!

I’d like to lose the grass, have a larger patio off the back of the house, a low maint contemporary design to incorporating a small water feature. There is also an area in the garden but behind the garage that is laid to patio that i will use for al fresco dining.

Any ideas gratefully received.

I think you are right to ditch the grass with such a small plot, unless you have young children. I think having a mixture of surfaces, say some paving, some pavers, some gravel, will create interest. Water features are lovely, you can go for a simple bowl with a pump up to a full pond. There are lots that come complete with a pump that plugs in. They come with very long leads so there is a choice of places you can locate them. Primrose have a vast selection www.primrose.co.uk. Lush planting will really make a garden. You can have all sorts of landscaping but if there isn’t enough planting it will never look right. Luckily it’s a nice sunny garden so you can grow so many plants. Place plants in the front of all the fencing such as lovely climbers like Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle, Roses and Clematis is a start. I rather like the garden below where the planting area is in the middle of the garden.

Thanks Sonia! I agree re planting along the fence border. Originally thought of raised planters but forgot I’d need to double up so as not to rot fence so will def go for a wide planting scheme.

Thought about a simple rill coming out of garage wall into a rectangular trough with planting but no fish too.

The main issue is the angle of the house/garden in relation to paving. I’ll have a lot of waste if I go to edges

I'd love to help answer this, but I'm in the USA and don't know what zone Ireland is in, what sort of soil you have, or how many hours of light on an average summer day various parts of your yard get. For a cottage garden look, you need some perennials and some annuals. You'll also want a rose trellis somewhere in the mix. While this may sound silly, what you might want to do is keep a camera or cell phone with you and take photos of local yards you admire during different seasons over the next year then have an experienced gardener help you identify the plants that you like in the photographs so you can get them in your yard. The reason to take photographs during different seasons is because different plants will be in bloom. The reason to take the photos locally is because you'll be better able to tell which plants grow well in your soil type and climate zone.

Hello there... I hope I can be of some help as I have almost an identical sitting room - I will just share with you my sitting room this year!! All the walls started out in Dulux Timeless colour so I wanted to add an accent colour- like you, I have one end of the room that is patio doors. So the opposite wall to those, I chose as an accent wall - I know a lot of people suggest not having an accent wall but perhaps having horizontal painted stripes of colour etc... But as I was doing the painting, I knew I would have made a real hash of that!! So the third pic is my first attempt at an accent wall - The Greene Paint company - colour Bassalt. This was nice but I just got bored of it - it worked well against the richness of the wood floor etc and was very much a statement but in a few months I just couldn't settle with it. After several coats of white I have now settled on Farrow & Balls colour Lamp Room Grey. I know this seems all very neutral, but from the second photo you will see I have gone for cream curtains with neutral vertical pom-poms - but, by doing all this, I can now change the accent colour in this room at the drop of a hat and quite importantly - INEXPENSIVELY! For instance, if I wanted to, for Xmas, if I was going to spend a lot of time in that room, I could a. Go for red and cream cushions and create a Scandinavian look! Or b. Go for silver beaded cushions and silver candle jars and have a winter wonderland look! And equally in the summer, I could go for pastel pink floral cushions and a vase of delicate roses to bring the garden into the sitting room or just keep it neutral with ivory roses and a hint of lime green. So my advice would be to keep the expensive things neutral and then you can alter the in expensive things as you go along. I also think one expensive piece in any room is a good investment - be it a huge oversized pewter bowl or a something similar - that again is neutral in colour but is a statement piece. HI Sophie, Thanks so much for the suggestions. We would never have thought of moving the sink - I guess you get used to things where they have always been! Just so I can understand and visual where you suggest moving things to, when you say move the fridge down to opposite the pennisula, do you mean near the entry to the kitchen (where the small three cupboards are shown on the drawing above) or where the cooktop is currently? I know one concern that my mum has is that the width of the fridge will jut out too far into the kitchen, taking up too much room. I've attached a picture with dimensions on it. Keep the suggestions coming :)
