Cast iron radiators

Hi all,

I need to replace the radiators in my victorian terrace. I'd love to replace them (or at least some of them) with refurbished cast iron ones, but the prices I've found so far are eye watering. Does anyone have any advice? I know I can get replicas which are heat efficient and look similar - I might do this for some rooms. But ideally I'd love to source a few real ones too.

If anyone has any advice around sourcing them, I'd be very grateful :)

Original can be nice but they are first and formost for heating so I'd say go with new. The originals even reconditioned will be colder and more prone to leaking and I'm not sure what you'd really gain for originals other then you knowing they are original (But from some other house, not even your house just someones somewhere)

A lot of designers and architectes go on about being 'authentic' and 'original' and not fakeing the past but I'm not one of them. If it looks right I'm happier with modern reproductions as originals can be money pits.

Thanks so much for this advice - that makes sense! I guess I'd avoided the replicas cause the ones I've seen so far haven't looked that similar. If any suppliers spring to mind that are good quality then let me know! Thanks again.

Hi Louise, In a room like this I always like to keep the walls and ceilings ( including the small door and frame 1 colour...in this case a lavender. I'd start by finding colour chips that have the same colour as the carpet, and then go a few shades lighter but in the same tome. All baseboards and door to hall should be the same colour as the iron beds...off white. With the walls a colour you'll be able to see the pretty pattern of the frame. OR find a small scaled pattern of any of the shades of purple and the cream same as the bed frame) with the same fabric. Make custom bedding to match. In a small room 1 pattern works well everywhere. If you go the paint route, try to find fabric with soft gold, lavender, purple for a skirted table between the beds if there's room. You can put it on a cardboard table and base...found in some fabric or craft stores. Top it with a thin piece of glass ( Pier 1) and away you go.Don't be afraid of colour or small pattern in a small space, as you are going for the impact. Have fun! Shaila

Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

Hello Mary, If it's an old fashioned style then I say show it off! People pay a lot for these... I would choose mirrors that have an antique feel if this is the feel of the house... Even ultra modern styled homes have period fittings and they work beautifully.. If the hall is small then perhaps you want to think of something that might continue down the hall... so maybe you buy a couple and space them accordingly... Choose something that has good dimensions according to the height of the hall... This will also throw light into it and give it a feeling of space... So the mirrors can be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.. : ))

Got the bath for free. Builder literally moved the wall frame to accommodate it. Concerned it looks ridiculous as its a tight squeeze so any ideas of what I can do to make this bath look ok in the room. I'm going to paint the tub a different colour. Don't say get rid of the bath cos it's not an option!!!

I replaced all my bog standard radiators with cast iron radiators from Trade Radiators online. It was cheaper to have them shipped from England to Northern Ireland than to buy locally! And of course they are extremely heavy so their pricing including delivery was very competitive. You can have any finish or ral colour you like. Here’s a picture of one of mine. I also got some in Old Penny.
