We’ve just moved into our house which was built around 1900/1905 - do you think this is an original fireplace? It’s a solid dark wood underneath with layers of think paint on top.
Yes, I have this niggleing feeling theres somthing dodgy about it, but the carving is finer then I'd expect for a modern one. Though those bits sticking out at the sides look odd. never seen a fireplace with those and bits of moulding just stuck here and there.
The side bits are definitely what’s throwing us! We haven’t opened up the middle yet but by the sounds of it it’s been bricked up behind there so not hopeful
