Not sure if I need an architect or an interior designer?

Hi. I am in the process of finalising my sale on a 1960’s detached house that is in need of some cosmetic update (new bathrooms, decoration etc). I’m struggling to decide what support I need to work out how I best use the space downstairs (the garage was converted into the kitchen), which has created 2 living spaces. Do I need an architect/interior designer? Any guidance would be appreciated. Many thanks Carla

I’m not sure you need either tbh. Ultimately you need to think how you want to use the space ie do you want an office area in there or perhaps a separate reading area or play area if you have kids. Do you have existing furniture you need to use?

There are people on here whom can provide layout ideas but if you’re working with existing pieces would obviously need dimensions plus details of how many people you want to seat, whether you have a tv etc (and size!)

If there are not going to be any structural changes such as removing walls or adding an extension then I don’t think you need an architect. An interior designer may be able to give you some ideas and mood boards for how to decorate the rooms if you are feeling a little overwhelmed, and a kitchen or bathroom designer could help with those rooms. Or you could ask other Houzzers for decor ideas, room by room and it won’t cost you a thing!

Jalna99--Do you mean that there is no patio outside the front door? Or do you mean that you would like to pull the exterior door forward, under the existing porch roof enough to facilitate movement between rooms more easily? Both actions will require drawings and permits, I have little doubt, The second opton is much more substantial, because you would be creating new habitable space to what is now the exterior side of the structure. I suggest looking through the Houzz resources, and choosing a good bloke with the proper training in design that can steer you through the design and permit process to the extent that it will serve your immediate needs. thanks for posting the photos. First, I feel like there is a mix of styles in the design that aren't really complementing each other. The waterfall walnut frame around the frig and wall oven areas is VERY modern. But the rounded front cooktop/bar, the divided light glass front cabinet doors, and molding on the upper cabinets are very traditional -- maybe even a bit 'cottage'. The looks are fighting each other IMHO. Also, I would reconsider the placement of the wall ovens -- they seem very crowded back in that corner. And the range hood going to the ceiling but the cabinets stopping short looks odd to me. Maybe a different hood with a narrower chimney would look better. And, is that the dishwasher on the island? --- Yikes -- I would want that right next to the sink (otherwise you'll be dripping water all over the floor everytime you load it)

It's difficult to provide decent advice with limited information. Issues to consider: - access to the front door of new house, is it level or on a low slope? - is there level access from all external doors? i.e. no steps up or down. Do you need a ramp building with handrails? - is there a toilet downstairs? Do you need mobility aids like grab rails and emergency call systems? - doors need to be wide enough to get through. Assuming you use a wheelchair you may need wider doors. - is the new house on a single storey only? Bungalow? Obviously better if it is as there are no stairs to navigate. - steps and stairs generally - try to avoid properties with these or make sure they are limited or have a low rise and large tread area. - age of new house. The newer it is the more likely it is to more suited for accessibility. The older it is the harder it will be. New houses have access requirement regulations to comply with. - do you need an accessible kitchen? Larger space needed with low worktops for wheelchairs? Not sure if this is any help but maybe it is..?

An interior designer 'should 'be able to do space planning for you (internal changes, moveing walls etc) though not all offer this; I do because I came to interior design through an architecture degree rather interior design. But If you want to extend out other then a premade conservatory etc you'd need an architect.
