Front garden ideas

Looking to put in a bit of a nicer path to stop a baby buggy getting muddy all the time when we bring it in. This would include upping the existing slabs to match.

I'd also like to put some lights in the garden to make it a bit more appealing.

Also debatable if we'd get rid of the grass, its a weed bed and a pita to mow.

Other than just replacing paving has anyone got any ideas?

A quick and easy solution would be to put an edge along the garden bed and use gravel to fill in where the grass currently is. Of course it will probably require a bit of work to lay it properly so it doesn't become gravel with grass poking up! Another option could be to lay some grid form concrete and allow grass to grow within the grid - greerery and a stable surface to push over and it would allow drainage aswell, which might help the mud levels in winter.

HI -- That is a big yard . Section off for your needs . Plan a patio and entertainment area close to the house . Then an area for the kids and then an area for a garden if needed and so on . Maybe build a little garden /summer house that has a fireplace or is screened in . Then the left over area you could just have it as a natural meadow with lots of trees where you don't need to mow grass -- the dog would love that . Add lighting too. Use some Eco grass ( no mow ) and lots of perennials and trees . Make a grove of trees like aspens or birches . Because of the size of your property , you should consult with a landscape designer .

I agree re Skimmia, also look at Daphne odora and Sarcococca (both have fantastic scent), Viburnum davidii, Hellebores for early flowers and Astrantia and Geraniums for summer colour. Improve the soil before planting by adding loads of rich compost or rotted horse manure.

Considering building a wall (no pun intended) along the left and right sides of the garden in this photo Left side Right side A similar type of brick to the ones used here The overall objective is brighten up the garden without trying to make it look too flashy. On the left side I'd like to plant Portuguese laurel for privacy and prevent overlooking from the adjoining property. The slide and swings in the photo have to go due to wear and will replace with a treehouse at the bottom of the garden beside the blue shed. The garden is approx. 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. Would really appreciate any design tips or potential pitfalls...

yeh, im conscious If im DIY'ing it could end up looking horrendous without decent ground prep. The other issue is that the tree roots are showing from the front tree.

I think I'll just edge along with and pave it.

I like the idea of cobble setts but wondering with the house age it would look out of place

The grass does look like its struggling to survive. I think you've got great ideas to improve it with a wide path, lighting etc. You could change the lawn to a flower bed and use weed-proof membrane to make it low maintenance. Putting in a shrub or small tree to give some additional interest would make it look particularly special. I think I'd avoid putting gravel and small children together - it is likely to get messy!

I would lay a sturdy wide path and get rid of the tiny amount of grass. You could lay a Mixture of paving to keep it interesting. Clay pavers are beautiful (first pic). I would leave a border and I see you have shrubs/hedging, but I would remove the shrubs and add low growing perennial flowers like Aubretia, Geranium, Erigeron etc. Here’s some ideas.
