DIY Kitchens Storage

Please help with kitchen pantry/larder/cubby area

Hello,

We have this area in our kitchen, the right wall is masonry, with a small obscure window going in to the garage, the other sides and top of it are hardboard it seems. It is in under the stairs.

We are looking to re-board it out and have it as a nice storage space for the bin, some mops and food items, tins, herbs, pasta, rice etc.

We are open to both shutting off the area (or top half only) with a door: standard cupboard door or maybe concertina or roller perhaps - or could even leave it all open to show it off (if it looks nice!!!)

Was just looking for inspiration and assistance as my searches online keep coming up with larger walk-in areas or purpose made units.

Just want to make best use of the space and have it as a nice looking area we can be proud of!

I had a similar cupboard housing my boiler. I had a joiner build some built in cupboards, so it now blends in.

Yo could create a small pantry (it looks like it was one with the battens), so a great spot for storing hoover, ironing board etc. I would put a full door on it as storage rarely looks attractive. Love Sarah’s ideas.

The sink in the island is the way to go here. As Lampert Dias mentioned above, your island can be larger than drawn. I prefer the sink and the breakfast bar at the same height as pictured above, but some people like to step the bar side up to protect it from the sink. It is an option. You can put the pantry and refrigerator on either side of the wall or even split them up and flank the wall as long as the refrigerator door can open. I would take the opportunity for more storage or display and put a cabinet on the wall behind the breakfast bar. Consider using a shallower cabinet there like 17" deep. It could be like a "china" cabinet display piece or more pantry storage if needed.

Happy to help ! I'm only a short swim away in England !! I think if you want a truly opulent cream for the kitchen cabinets - I'd suggest you get a colour match for the range ! It looks a very creamy cream ! Think it could be stunning ! Then have slightly lighter walls and tiles to keep the room feeling light and airy ! If you have walnut stain for your worktop on your island , I'd suggest using that on your exposed legs if you go for the dipped paint look on the table and chairs ! Are you having the classic CC shaped island ?!?

Jen, are you sure everything is in proportion? I'm asking, because that store seems to be just a bit wider than a door (so about 1 m) which is fine, but doesn't give much space to manoeuvre inside it. Also, a bit too many doors in a small space, but I'm afraid I can't offer you a remedy for that. You have two wide, massive windows and a door in between, I think that will give plenty of light. Personally, I'd just add skylights or a glass roof. Or a long strip of glass all along What you don't seem to have is ventilation windows. Trust me, you're going to want one in the utility, or at least a good fan. Transom style windows could work too if you can open them. I really wish you'd see an architect... there are lots of different, small things that a professional can spot from miles away that you wouldn't even consider. As I said, I regret we didn't; our house is great, but it could've been even better!

I agree with 'Kitchens and Baths', you are leaving yourself precious little counterspace to accommodate 2 side-by-side wall ovens? Can't you stack them if you need 2? Also, a warning, I wouldn't be taking anything out of those ovens and "turning to the island" with them...not with a quartz countertop!! You'll have that whole end all scorched...unless you are quick and accurate with lots of trivets! But your "open shelving" is going to look like a pinched-in forgotten corner pantry...you really need more space for them too , if it is going to look right. Right now as it is, 2 feet of them are all but beyond reach (over the lower countertop) and then a mere 2 feet worth of actually OPEN, available space you can reach, then the monster of the floor to ceiling cabinet will be in the way. It will be like reaching around into a closet. I would seriously reconsider this design BEFORE your electrician shows up--and before you order all those (expensive!) cabinets. But as for the island 'crowding' the walkway--it looks as if your drawing says 1.2 meters? That's plenty and more than enough, even for running boisterous kiddos, you're fine there. Best of Luck.

It’s a perfect area for a small pantry. Many would kill for such a space. So useful. I’d work out exactly what you want to store in there and draw a plan and then ask a carpenter to offer you a quote. Tall items such as mops and ironing boards are always a pain to store. Some shelves on the wall for tins etc and you’re sorted.

This is how it ended up.
Reboarded the back and made shelving from mdf. Painted the sides and vinyl wrapped the shelves.

Then made a spice rack to suit.
