I don’t have any building expertise but am confused...

Flimsy walls would suggest new partition walls when the flats were converted so not sure why these would have lining paper although perhaps could be dry lined which can be problematic . I assume the bedroom may also have original solid walls which could have lining paper. I guess you always run the risk of damage when removing panelling or having to redo the lining paper when you remove wallpaper. I don’t really understand how he could possibly test this though? Has he explained?

I assume you were panelling the lower half and papering the top? Given you’re unlikely to want to change the panelling any time soon I’d go ahead. Perhaps you could use one of the temporary/peel and stick 2wall papers above?

As an FYI I had a decorator look at a wallpapered room last week, he tested a couple of strips and they came off really easily. It’s an early Victorian and those walls are also covered in lining paper. I have no idea whether removing the rest will be as easy though 😂

thank you so much for your advice! so the structure is pretty much unchanged so it's not a new wall that was erected in between rooms. Walls are original, solid but when a hole is drilled in them, they do have this crumbly stuff that comes out...am I making ANY sense?! 😂🙃

He's basing his opinion on the flats that he's renovated and that he also bought and renovated his own flat on the same road as mine. I don't know if he was putting me off extra work to help me save money OR he didn't want to take on more work. I've had a few carpenters flake on me so I'm not sure which of these two it is- will see if I do get a quote from him or not 🤷🏻‍♀️

yes for the bedroom, papering on top and painting below the beading. The wallpaper I want alone is likely to cost £1000 so I would die if I buy it and then can't use it...😬

Paint mapping/wallpapering issue

Hi folks, Just wondering if anyone might have a solution for this that doesn't involve plastering the wall again? Decorator stripped old wallpaper which left a mapping issue behind the new wallpaper. My understanding is that the wall was originally painted after being plastered before the previous wallpaper went on many years ago, and that this mapping is caused by that old paint being pulled off. I do have some rolls of the wallpaper left so it can be re-papered but this problem would obviously need to be solved first Anyone have any ideas? Would it be possible that sanding the affected areas (even by hand) and then using lining paper behind the wallpaper might get a tolerable result?

Ok, so all original walls? So is it the brick crumbling or the plaster?

I had a decorator create a panelled wall a year or so ago. From memory he just used adhesive and then decorators caulk. If he did use any nails or screws as back up then I can’t see/feel them at all as have just been to check but pretty sure he didn’t!

The walls don’t sound that great for paper. I haven’t used the temporary stuff personally but the other option is to paint over the paper when you do want a change. As long as it’s properly secure, no gaps etc then it’s fine

Are the walls currently wallpapered? Though not ideal, you can apply wallpaper on top. Not something I condone, but has been done by previous owners of my house. Why not try stripping the walls yourself to see what you're dealing with. In the worst case scenario you may need the walls skimmed, or have heavy duty lining paper hung.
I think most so called professional decorators try to avoid doing any preparation of the walls, hence I have several layers of painted over wallpaper to strip.

@minnie101 honestly it's definitely helpful. I've been stressing about on my own 😂

Attaching the photo of the living room wall. The gaping hole should give an indication of what the wall's like...the decorator will be taking care of all of this though.

I guess I should see what the decorator suggests once he's tested the walls after removing the lining paper.

@User the flat isn't currently wallpapered other than the lining paper on the walls. There's is one tiny part in the living room that has a textured paper which will need removing.

I'm scared of stripping the walls and then realise I've created another problem. As you can tell I'm a novice when it comes to this 😂

The decorator I've got is happy to use a more heavy duty lining paper in case any major issues arise, and also prepare the walls if needed.

It's just the way the guy told me not to do anything to the walls that I got super concerned thinking is something structurally wrong with my flat- But that's not the case at all. So I suppose I'll get the decorator to check the walls before we do any papering 😊. Thank you Sarah!

@User apparently it can lead to the new wallpaper bubbling and not sticking properly...again based on the opinion of the building guy who came to review the property. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have no clue what he was saying then tbh...🤨 he was like the most I can advise is just paint the walls. I was a little stressed by the end of his visit. But looks like I should take a second opinion.

I hadn’t realised he was removing the lining paper. I have wallpaper in 3 rooms, all which went over lining paper. They just applied a watered down coat of emulsion to highlight any bubbles or cracks and then filled and rubbed down etc before wallpapering
