Decorating advice needed for open plan area in new home
We have recently purchased a house which needs a lot of work done to it and I would love some advice on potential ideas for layout/colours/design of our open plan space. Please excuse the absolute mish mash of furniture, we haven't been able to do anything to the rooms yet due to lockdown. The kitchen is north facing and is going to be replaced with a white handleless kitchen which will have roughly the same layout except no wall cupboards on the hob wall. In the dining room the fire surround and hearth can be changed. We were thinking of a walnut coloured LVT floor throughout. One set of patio doors in living room leads to a conservatory and the other to a balcony. The living room is south facing. I'm am unsure what colours to choose for the walls to make the most of the rooms/space we have. Before choosing a white kitchen I had thought about white walls and colourful seating/rugs etc in living area but now think white throughout may be too much? I liked the idea of a darker dining room area but not sure how to do this with a white open plan kitchen? Any ideas for me to consider colours/styles/combinations I haven't thought of would be very welcome, thank you.

3 years agoIt’s quite a large space, have you thought about how you want to use it as you‘ve got surplus space in both living and dining?
personally I wouldn’t go for walnut if the kitchen is dark and you want light walls, it may be too dark and the contrast will make the rooms feel narrower. I’d go for a pale-mid oak, maybe in a herringbone to make the rooms feel wider. I would paint all the dark doors, in a lighter shade of the wall paint. Maybe a pale’ish warm taupe? I’d paint the skirting in the wall colour to make the ceilings seem higher. I’d make the patio doors the same colour, which could be dark if wanted. I think you need large rugs to zone the areas so furniture feet are on it and a coffee table would help for the living area to bring furniture into the middle of the room. . You could paint the arch between living and dining a darker tone (ignore the colours, was just a visual) and do the same on the short wall in the living area where the fridge is. A mirror would help on the dining room wall. Are you adding any downlights to the kitchen? I cant work out if the dining light is over the table but you could zone it with something lower but doesn’t visually fill the space. You might also consider wall lights in the dining area plus floor and table lamps throughout.

Comments (1)Hi. I would try and go for a cohesive look throughout the house so it flows. Maybe choose a few colours for the walls that work together which could be different shades of grey for example (no pun intended!) or another neutral colour. Have a look at farrow and ball for inspiration as they make suggestions for colour matches. Paint all your ceilings and woodwork throughout in the same colour. Then pick accent colours for each room. Again these could be colours that work together. Have a look at a colour wheel to see what colours work together. As your living area is open plan you definitely need the colours to work together. If you chose a grey for example you could have an accent wall in a darker shade. I hope that helps. Comments (2)Another option that I was thinking of, knock the internal glass walls of the conservatory and make the hall smaller - this leaves a very large open plan space (9m x 6.4m) but I have no idea how best a space like this could be used?? 3 years agoA screen could definitely work for the play area. I’m not sure if it’s a scandi or midcentury style you like but you could also try and blend the play area in style wise ? The blackboard wall is a bit busy but couldn’t find one to photoshop and it should all sit on a rug. Just thinking teepees are actually good for hiding larger toys away! Just a thought anyway as you may well want to hide everything!
I‘m not surprised you’re overwhelmed! It’s a fantastic space but I’d want to make it feel wider and taller and zoning is key (big plants also help for that). It sounds like you’re all over the lighting :)

3 years agoHerringbone patterns are quite good as your eye is just drawn to the “V” rather than a plank floor which draws your eye to the end. Just dearer to lay with the time involved 😞
I personally love walnut, however I don’t think lights walls and a dark floor mix well visually for a (relatively) narrow room with the contrast in tone as it brings the walls in. Walnut floors also show every speck of dirt which may also be a consideration with kids. Your views sound amazing 🤩
How about something with a green tone such as shaded white or shadow white for the kitchen side along with the arch in something like India yellow? You could then use a dark colour on the short wall in the living area. Are you having tiles in the kitchen at all?
I think greens could also work though, depends what you want!
