Downdraft extractor and gas hob

We're renovating the kitchen and looking to have a gas hob in the island. The kitchen designer recommended a downdraft extractor, but the builder said they really don't recommend it.

It will be problematic to have a ceiling extractor. Does anyone have experience with a downdraft extractor and gas hob?

I'm thinking the same way Darzy,maybe I will go with all the same or find a nice tile. I am getting ready to refit my kitchen so may need some help.i am thinking of a grey coloured farrow and ball colour on the bottom cabinets and white on the top. On the back wall of the kitchen I have a brick chimney hood so this time I would like to do something different and not as bulky looking so was thinking of doing a small mantle and just putting a downdraft behind my cooking hob if anyone can advise does the downdrafter really work?

Hi, One of the possible plans is to block off the window and put tall units with eye level ovens, larder, fridge freezer etc. keep the sink run in a straight line with sink, dishwasher, pull out bin and in the island put in the hob with drawers underneath. Either put in ceiling mounted extractor or a downdraft depending on what stage of build you are at. Hope this helps, we are in Northern Ireland if you but do work throughout the uk. A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

I have an Elica nicolatesla hob/extractor coming and my builder has tunnel a 2.5 meter long tunnel with 110mm x 60mm diameter but I'm concerned this is too narrow after finding the manual online. It gives a a small amount of ducting which is 227 x 94 though there is a mention of using smaller for tunnelling, it offers accessories but the smallest diameter is 158 x 59mm. He said he phoned the distributor to ask what they recommended but I'm concerned performance or noise levels will be effected.

We worked closely with a high end bespoke maker early on in our kitchen remodel saga.... they weren’t keen on downdraft models because of how much space they take up underneath, not just the unit itself but the venting. I suspect that might be part of why the builder doesn’t recommend it, as it will complicate fitting.
