what type of plaster is this?

Hi All, unfortunately we noticed some bubbling paint / efflorescence in a corner of our living room. I scraped the many layers of paint off to see where the water was seeping in and found the problem... however I was surprised by the mix of plaster used here. I recognise the gypsum on the right, but what is on the left hand wall?? The surface is extremely smooth and solid (no crumbling)? The property is Edwardian, but it doesn’t look like lime plaster to me?

Difficult to tell but it looks like sand and cement waterproof plaster. Alternatively renovation plaster which is used when people have had damp issues.

I quite like glass metro tiles. If you wanted a glass splashback most glass companies should be able to match a specific colour but make sure that is toughened. I wouldn't recommend mirror just because of the heat from the cooker. How is the brickwork outside? Is it seeping in through that?

Yes, probably. The brickwork has seen better days, the mortar is crumbly so we have treated it with water seal today. Next weekend we will also scrape and repoint the most consumed joints. We thought water was collecting from a leaking gutter joint overhead, we got that fixed last week so hopefully that will solve the problem. I am tempted to see if the internal wall dries out now that the gutter is fixed... if it doesn’t then it must come from somewhere else!

See how you go now you’ve applied the water sealant on the brickwork. It normally works.
