How to improve the exterior look of our 70's bungalow

We have a 70's bungalow in the countryside, its high up and over looks fields at the front and back. Im really into the country look. Do you have any suggestions on improving the external look so it looks more countryfied and not to 70's? I was thinking maybe rendered with agate grey windows and a new door, but finding it hard to visualise and dont want to make the wrong decision.

Not sure if the left window needs replacing with one with more panes/bay/full depth bi-folds etc.

If you want agate windows, I’d go slightly warmer on the render than in the link. I think your front window is fine but agree would change the door and maybe look at landscaping?

Personally I think the wide windows are what betrays this properties age.
If you want a cottage look then you are going to have to change the proportions of the window as well as the style.

As far as how you achieve the cottage look weatherboarding, render, stone facing, painted brick are all solutions

I think the design of the exterior has real 70s integrity. A bit of paint is all you need. Replace the garage doors with floor to ceiling windows matching the aesthetic the current windows already have. You should check out Cocontest.com for architecture work, or you could try and find an interior architect (there are degree courses in interior architecture these days) I've seen loads of one plan's posts and it would definitely be worth having a chat with them. I also think that you'll get more out of the project if you can educate yourself a little on design. I do my best to do this over on www.houseplanshelper.com

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!

This might sound a bit like being on the fence given the advice you've had already... How about a mid to dark grey ( less contrast than black), RAL 7022 is a favourite of mine (warmer grey), or look at a green grey, as something that will have the colour of the olive, with a good amount of contrast against the white render, (you won't have the warm rich colours of the brickwork as in the photos above (which the olive looks good against)). If you are painting the timber windows you would do well to look at microporous opaque stains to reduce your on-going maintenance. A benefit of aluclad composite windows is colour outside can be factory supplied different to the interior finish. Hope this might help. Regards, Nick

I saw these pics and thought of this post. They do show that getting the right palate can completely change the feel. I also liked that both of these has added some covered outside space.

Don’t forget that any external remodelling will require planning permission. There are also architects who specialise in exterior remodelling

Although perhaps counterintuitive a dark exterior can sit very comfortably in a green and rural setting
