Kitchen Flooring - what to choose?

So our next important decision is what flooring to choose, once our kitchen is installed next month. I prefer to steer clear of ceramic tiles as they are so cold underfoot and also can chip easily if you drop anything hard, which in a busy kitchen can happen from time to time!

I've been looking into vinyl wood effect and wondered if anyone has experience of this system in their kitchen. Is it completely waterproof as it claims? Would appreciate any other suggestions too. TIA.

We've installed Karndean for a few clients. The last one the client already had their dining and lounge fitted years before but wanted to carry that through to the new extension/kitchen. After it was all fitted, you couldn't tell the difference between the old and the new. There's some images that show a little of the floor on the home page of our website (crusty bread pic) and 2nd image on the furniture page, if you'd like a look. Obviously they will do many other designs for all tastes.

Yes - LVT is the best flooring on the market now for kitchens. Super hardwearing, available in every colour & material look, easy to fit (choose click), lightweight, and warmer & safer under foot.

You can’t absolutely saturate it but it stands every day splashing from a bath or kitchen sink

Love the colour and style of cabinets. The worktops are beautiful. The flooring is a bit wishy washy and I would prefer a chimney hood style extractor fan - even though this one is the same colour as the kitchen, to me it sticks out like a sore thumb. Personally, I like the 'working triangle' to be at the centre of the kitchen and the fridge freezer looks like an after thought, stuck on at the end, in this design.

Matt finish walnut will show pretty much everything...the yellow 'doodle hair will show everytime it lands. The good news is everything is so dark you will only see half of the dog hair. A ligher floor in a dark home will have the same effect as a dark floor in a well lit home. You might want to look at a floor that is stained (like white or European Oak) with a mid-tone brown (2 steps lighter than walnut) and you will have your crisp definition between wood and wall AND you will have a floor that is more forgiving with 'doodle curls. And be aware that many people find a matt finishe VERY hard to live with. It shows every hand print, paw print, nose print, "skin" print you can imagine. Skin oils are SHINIER than a matt finish = shows up every time a finger, toe, foot, dog pad hits the floor. Everytime. A satin is easier to live with.

This is what I've been considering for flooring. I love parquet but am worried the pattern will make the house look smaller. I prefer warm tones. The paint colour is Shermin Williams Alpaca if that helps.

Would suggest white! A warm white like wimbourne white. All of the most beautiful rooms in my house are painted white! Then add in some wall art and some plants.

Lots of options for LVT - I’ve used Amtico in the kitchens of my last two houses, current one below. Hard wearing, warm and looks good.

Don’t forget porcelain tiles. Rock hard and difficult to chip. Very easy to care for too. Best with underfloor heating as it can be cold underfoot in winter, but fabulously cool in summer. Comes in a large array of styles.

Karndean is very well known but I’ve never used. Hopefully someone on here has!

Not much difference between Karndean and Amtico - the latter slightly more expensive. Both offer great durability. I’ve had both, the latter went for Amtico due to finish I wanted - colour and size of tile. I don’t think you’d be disappointed with either. You can get samples of both - at one point I had about 15 small squares lined up on the floor and by process of elimination settled on the Eden Oak.

My brother recently has karndean oak effect herringbone flooring in his kitchen - it looks amazing! They had real parquet in their dining room before, but extended and knocked the rooms together and had issues with floor levels that meant they needed something thinner than the proper parquet. It looks just as good as the real thing and is really nice to walk on too.

Yeah - it’s a brand. There’s loads of brands. Amtico rule the market, followed by Karndean. I’ve had branded & unbranded. They’re all pretty much the same but you pay a premium for the brand. Same as designer clothing :) Best to get samples & read reviews. Some are click together (really simple) & others are glue down which need to be done my a pro or an advanced diyer
