Renovating basic home exterior - front style

Hi,

We would like to change the style of the front exterior of our newly bought terraced home and would love some advice about what professionals we will need to hire for that, ideas, and estimated cost.

We have never renovated anything before, so I'm quite lost.

I’m not sure it’s a good idea trying to make the external look like a different style period house. But window box planters would be nice.

One fairly simple upgrade could be to create a a front garden area with substantial planting and attractive paving / tiling / fencing.

Can you perhaps share some photos taken further away so we can see more of the context?

I talked with an architect that advised me that changing the style is unlikely to be approved by the council if the house connected to a row of similar houses. In our case only ours and the next one are alike as you can see, there are the only new (there was an empty area at the end of the row) but attached to a row with classic red brick houses.

So, I guess we will try to focus on minor changes to give it more personality. Window box planters, maybe improving windows and door, and I like ED suggestion of creating a nice front garden.

Thanks for the feedback, we had something similar in mind. Would you suggest bringing the door out to the front? What about the windows either side, we would think about replacing maybe in a different colour, possibly grey, and add some cedar cladding to the house front and paint walls grey. We are also toying with the idea of bring double doors out to the front with arclight over head and then to add coving around the windows with arc that mirrors the arc light to try and soften the whole angular look to to the front. Never been to Ireland but when I think of Irish pubs, I think of rich mahoganies and deep jeweltones. Something welcoming and friendly with a bit of blarney; steeped in tradition with a sense of humor. My quick net search has turned up exteriors of mostly primary hues but a lot is going to depend on what type of clientele the owner wants to attract. I'm not sure that color is going to be your biggest hurdle. I think style is and once you determine that, then choosing the color will follow fairly easily.

I think you are right, I really like polished dark wood with grey and white - very contemporary Australian style. Just make sure that they are non-slip as anyone with kids will worry about this so make sure it is clearly stated in your sales particulars so you don't put anyone off - buyers can be so fussy about this slightest little thing. If not, you could always go for a runner thereby keeping the polished walnut but also having stair carpet but that seems like an unnecessary expense as you are selling. Good luck :-)

If you like sash windows why not look at the attached or maybe consider a New England style houses as sashes were common? Is the ground floor of the house wide enough to take a door and 2 windows?
