Victorian fireplace chimney breast restoration

Beth

Hi all,

I have recently bought a Victorian terraced house and I am in the process of exposing the fireplace and preferably the whole chimney breast. Having taken off some of the plaster, there appears to be a line of bricks that have been replaced at some point. Wondering if it's possible to take them out and put in some reclaimed bricks without the whole thing falling down!

Any advice much appreciated!

Hi Beth, when I exposed our fireplace I got a builder in to ensure it was safe to do so. Granted the builder was my brother, so I had an advantage, but I would worry that you may remove a crucial supporting part. Just being cautious.

Hi Sonia, sorry I probably should've mentioned that I don't plan to do it myself - I will get a builder in! Just not even sure whether it's something they can do without the join in the replacement bricks being really obvious.

Ah sorry I misunderstood. Good to hear though! I’m thinking try and use reclaimed bricks as they have that aged look which would tie in nicely? Gumtree, EBay or Facebook selling sites are often good places to get old bricks.
