Kitchens Design Dilemma

north facing kitchen dilemma!

Hi folks

So we have an awkwardly shaped kitchen in our new house - a sort of side corridor on the left, then the main dining area.

In the new design, the left wall as you look at the garden will be counter top the whole way, and we are installing bifolds across the garden wall, replacing the existing door and small window. The fridge and tall larder will be in the corridor part.

The kitchen is north facing and there’s a balcony above the bifolds, further restricting light entry.

My husband is very keen on green, not the green of the walls which we both hate, but a kind of turquoise colour. I’d rather white or pale wood but am trying to find a colour we both like...

Either way, he really wants a shade I consider too dark. We’re probably going with an IKEA kitchen with custom made fronts - some examples of colours are below stuck on a cupboard door. All these photos taken at night. They appear slightly darker than they are, particularly the blue on top which is significantly paler.

Any thoughts on colours welcome!! I’m conscious that bluey colours are controversial in a north facing room, but we had off white in our previous north facing kitchen and I began to feel it was fighting the light, which irritated me. Anywya, like I said, him indoors doesn’t want white at least for the cupboards.

Floors will probably be oak. Countertop likely white - quartz or other stone.

We’re in the UK for context!

I really like the idea of a green kitchen, oak floor and white countertop. A light coloured countertop has a big effect on how light or dark the kitchen will feel. I like the darkest green on your cupboard door.

But a sage green could also work well.

Bottom right for me, the lighter one.

The problem with greens is that each manufacturer may call them Sage but each one will be a different colour and some are vastly different.

Dark green is now becoming popular and although I do like it, I also think that it has to be fitted in the right situation. Combined with a white worktop it looks great.

Currently designing island unit for open-plan kitchen in terrace house. My query is should I opt for (a) sink in island. Have two kids so concerned about it being a messy focal point (b) hob- as House is terrace with no direct access to external wall extractor fan could be an issue or (c) no sink or hob and just using island for prep and eating. Concern with this is will the 3 meters of space behind enough to accommodate sink and hob. Also not sure I want to be facing wall when cooking and washing dishes. All views welcome and any other thoughts on design?

Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S. Conservatory is a junk room at the moment, facing a fence on the right hand side. The garage is used as a utility.

Out of the three I would definitely go for the darker one, the others look a bit too washed out for a North facing room. In rooms like this the lack of light can make things appear a bit flat so more colour or/and stronger contrasts can help. Coolness can be an issue (which is why I would avoid very pale colours, they can look colder) but you can inject a lot of warmth by focusing on texture and richness of materials rather than just colour.

Hi,

This space really does have so much potential.

Turquoise is a hard colour to work in a kitchen as it can appear very bright and loud if that is not what your looking for.

Both of these images are different shades of green that would work well. I would suggest whatever shade green you decided on, you keep the rest of the room light and this compliments the green well. The neutral colours and light woodwork make it an eye-catching statement.

Accessorizing in black and gold is also a beautiful touch to add, also adding a statement as soon as you walk in.

Hmm food for thought. If I have darkish green below and in the tall cupboards, yiu think white above? Or a pale green? Or...?

I'd go for a white. Maybe a softer white than the white in this pic. I'd make a mood board if I were you. See if you can get samples of paint colours, floor, countertop and tiles together.

We have F&B charlottes locks on one wall which is a warm deep red orange and tallow which is a creamy colour on others.

Sorry if I have confused you, I was showing examples of to separate shade ideas that both work well with soft and light shades on the walls, tiles, flooring ect.

I thought the pales would look good in a north facing room, but I take the point that they may look washed instead. So I’m pretty confused now, but will keep on thinking!
