Need Living Room Design Advice - Colour!

Hey everyone!

We'll soon be knocking the wall through between our dining room and living room to create a larger living space - and we're stuck on choosing a colour palette that will work with what we have.

Below is a floorplan showing what we're getting done (blocking up a door, putting a square arch in the wall) and where we plan to put key items (TV Stand, Sofas, Dining Table). Welcome any ideas on room design too!

We have a lot of things we'll be putting into a TV stand (The IKEA BESTA seems to be a pretty flexible solution as we have a chunky AV receiver to fit into it...). But critically, we have black floor standing speakers (these ones - though we have the covers for them if that'd help designing) that will go either side of the TV stand (the 'S' blocks in the floorplan).

The black speakers are what's making it tricky for us to design the room. We need advice on how to create a colour scheme that works with them, and are choosing the colours for our:

Floor (currently white tiles)
Wall (currently off-white)
Sofa
Curtains
TV Stand (is it best to go black for a consistency with the speakers?)

So the huge amount of choice is pretty daunting! And we've no idea what we might do, or could do!

Any and all thoughts would be hugely appreciated!!!

Hi,

I think you have to sort of ignore the speakers, from a design point of view. Even though they are big black objects, so is your TV. They are there for a reason. I think you need to focus on what you'd like for the floor, sofa, curtains, media unit and wall colour. The floor, walls and sofa are the largest surfaces in your room.

I would personally prefer a wooden and/or white media unit, wood (effect) floor, medium to light coloured sofa and medium/light coloured walls. You could consider painting the TV wall in a darker colour, so the TV and speakers won't stand out too much.

For example: I know these speakers are smaller, but it would also work with your larger ones. It's everything but the speakers that makes this a cosy room. If you know what I mean :-)

Thanks Carolina - this is really helpful, and the pictures help visualise it! I think you're right about the speakers the more I think about it :)

I think you should consider houssaon's idea of painting it the same color as the walls. Is the top of the tv console painted wood or is it a stone or composite? In the pictures my ipad shows me speckles (not dirt!!). My ipad sometimes *lies* to me. :) If the gray is the prominent color in the paint, maybe a darker gray would be a good choice too. If you are happy with the gray/green color next to your bookcases, then you should be able to pick a gray that would look good with both the new paint, and the bookcase. Gray next to the fireplace shouldn't be a problem :)

For starters your T.V. is way too high lower it to sit virtually on the mantel and take all the stuff off the mantle. If you are getting storage built get 2 made so one on each side of the fireplace for balance. I don't see what you have for lighting now and find the finish on the walls very busy. When I look at your idea books I am not really getting that same feel in the space as it is so maybe some more pictures would help with that.

Paint that wall behind the fireplace! A deep gray to pull out the grey/slate color in the brick. This will give you a blank canvas and accentuate that fireplace. Paint the mantel a creamy white to match the cream in the brick. Use simple accessories on mantel, no pictures with the TV. I would suggest a taller vase and lower potted green on one side. Maybe a slimmer vase on the other. Paint all walls grey, but use lighter that fp wall. Get rid of all the dark pillows and use creamy colored pillows with slipcovers for easy cleaning. (looks like there are young kids who live here too) Then add a couple accent pillows for color. I would replace that coffee table with a creamy leather (or pleather) ottoman. It can be used as a coffee table when needed by adding a tray. The rest of the time, it is a soft landing for young kids and a comfy place for your feet. :)

Hi Stan,

Are there particular colours or styles that you are already drawn to? The majority of living rooms will have black entertainment equipment so think first about what colours you are most drawn to and make you feel relaxed. Furniture that has a cool industrial vibe to it (e.g. black legs) will incorporate your equipment into the design and you can add in pattern and colours around it. Here are a couple of images that might help...

It looks like a really exciting project you are working on and getting it right at the start will definitely be worth it!
