Cushion and lamp for telephone seat

Picked up this used telephone seat to act as a table for a lamp on our landing. I reupholstered the seat a neutral colour....

... but what cushion and lamp to go for?

Eventually the wood panelling and wall will be painted light natural colours.

Ideally wanting something a little stand out Hence why the seat cover is a neutral colour.

Hi, okay, I'm probably the very first ever to mention this, but that window! That is stunning! Gorgeous!

I think you missed an opportunity with the seat. I think it's too bland. It would have been nice to have used a colour from that window for example. Or something like a Morris & Co fabric that pics up on the design of that glass (fabric: Honeysuckle & Tulip velvet, cushion: Made.com) And then add a large, more modern lamp perhaps to make it a bit unexpected? Absolutely loving Carolina’s suggestions and that stained window is stunning! How about a Tiffany Lamp. They’re very ornate and fussy but will really suit your home.

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

Beautiful fabric. I'm glad you need to keep them. But the rugs I posted were based on what I thought was more of a gold undertone to the background. But I think -- assuming you do want to change the rug -- you need to shop for traditional rugs, looking for those that will blend with the three colours in the curtains. Most will have additional colour/s in them, which will then help you choose your cushions and throws based on that palette. For instance, with the first rug above, if its border colours did tone with your curtains, you would have the bonus of that lovely blue/grey to play with too. With your current rug you could pick up the grey, as well as the plummy colours and beiges that tone so well with your curtains -- and do I see green in there as well? Curse monitors, they play with colours and confuse one's eyes. Still, they make this possible. When you have sorted out your basic colours -- and I think either the blue/grey or a subtle green would work very well as an addition in your room -- that gives you a basis for selecting cushions. I would start with a big, soft-textured cushion for the sofa in the background colour of your curtains. And then there's my favourite thing -- art for your walls. I'd love to see a big piece of art above the gorgeous stove. And then, and then .... pick a chandelier? Enough for now. Back to work.

Hi. I love your couch and if light is an issue, I would think about a large mirror because it'll bounce the light around the room (your little starburst one is a bit wasted over there). Mirrors don't have to be expensive - look in charity shops and second hand shops. If you go for a large canvas, make it quite colourful so the boring walls fade away. Again, you don't have to spend a fortune - there are lots of websites with affordable art. A floor lamp would be great and if you get a ceiling light, make sure it isn't so low that it blocks whatever fabulous new item you have hanging behind the couch. I'd see how it looks when you've done this before you paint or also to help choose your paint colour so it goes with mirror/art. Good luck!

Take out sofa, use beanbags and those blow up seats for their friends. Coloured rugs for tumbling and crawling on. Supersoft teddy bear blankets so they can curl up. Add in one of those soft blanket boxes for toy storage and so you have somewhere soft to perch when you are with them. Paper half way up the wall in the wall paper that kids can draw on, so they can decorate in whatever colour they like and you won't mind. A childs lift up desk, bookcase and some crazy lamps in weird colours. Then close the door, collapse on the sofa that you have moved, breathe a sigh of relief and thank your lucky stars that you have another room for the kids to go to. (Grab wine and pretend they aren't yours for half an hour! ;-) )
