Building a new house - what should the starting point be for kitchen?
Comments (2)Yes, I would and did start with cabinets. Browse through he kitchen photos here on Houzz until you determine your favorite styles. Start a kitchen idea book and save every photo that has something you like, cabinets will be your biggest investment. Once you know your style, begin thinking about counter tops and backsplash. One or the other will be your "star." If you already have a favorite, try to coordinate other choices with it. For example, I found my backsplash first, then chose the counter to go with it. Often people have their counter in first then struggle to find a backsplash. If you fall in love with a beautiful, busy granite you will want a simple backsplash. My floor was last, keeping it simple to avoid clashing with other choices. Good luck and have fun! Also if structure allows to remove this little bit of unnecessary wall by current kitchen entrance would make the space more open.( I think in the other plan I see it is happening?) the outside door swap for a window is a very good idea in my mind....See MoreNeed help with my new kitchen
Comments (3)There's a lot of cream/same colour in that room. You could contrast or offset. Try glass fronted wall cabinets in, say, blue. Or open shelving to display pictures, books, colourful jars etc....See MoreNew kitchen
Comments (5)You should probably think of the floor covering in the overall plan as a light colour or dark colour may have an impact on whether you choose a light or dark colour for the worktop. Two different worktops, one on the island and one on the rest of the units might look well too. I like timber for an island but only if you don't need the worktop to be heat resistant and it's not near the sink. We've picked a dark grey for our island and will probably choose an off white worktop with a vein in it to contrast with it. Good luck with your decisions!...See MoreSal Bella

3 years agoHi Sal, I have a ceramic sink that sits on top of my wooden worktop, so that may be a better option with laminate? It has got quite scratched, but it’s 10 years old so not bad really.
kitchen colours are a personal thing, so there isn’t one that’s the best as such. Looking at what people I know have had, they are dark grey, dark navy, pale grey and pale taupe (often called cashmere). For me, if I had to choose a new kitchen it would be pale green, but I love green. I would hate a dark kitchen, but that’s just me.
Also have a think about style. Do you want shiny, modern, handless or a matt finish shaker kitchen which has a nod to traditional but still modern. When we can get out again, have a look round some showrooms to get a feel of what you do and don’t like. Don’t rush into anything, get some kitchen companies to do some designs for you, take your time.
This is similar to my “sits on the worktop” sink and they are available everywhere. In fact I think it is my sink! 😊
