I am renovating my home (light work paint/fixtures). This color scheme is the previous owners so please don't judge. I am looking to make the place more modern, but cant remove the carpet even though I hate it.
In the repaint I would consider removing the dado rail, especially if you would like a more modern look, and have the full wall in one color. I would also not paint the celing moulding in a contrast color, the red in the bedroom pic is a tad jarring! The carpet doesn't look bad, so your starting point might be to see what is color combinations would work with the carpet. At a guess the lounge might take a stronger colour in a grey with blue tones.
Hi Ah Mir, looks like the previous owners loved a split colour wall feature! Looks like a great sized property though. I'm a recent start-up Interior Designer and would be happy to go over some colour schemes or new floorplan layouts if you'd like to get in touch?
When choosing colours it's always important to factor in natural daylight and which way your house faces, this can really affect some colours in a room.
If it's a period property I would leave the dado rails where they are. They're an opportunity to use two neutral shades as in the attached picture of a hall in a late Edwardian town house.
You don't mention whether you would consider changing or adding to the lighting. I would recommend doing so if the budget will stretch. If you hate the carpet but don't want to replace it, painted boards and rugs are a cost effective alternative, assuming you have boards.
It's always best to put all your samples together on a board rather than trying to choose elements piecemeal: flooring, paint shades, fabric, wood finishes, the lot. It it works on the board, it will work in the room.
So in the bedroom, for example, a combination of "whites" like this with a muted shade of one of the colours in the carpet picked up in the soft furnishings or a picture frame could work - the textures and shades rather than the patterns
. I would also paint the bed in a neutral shade and choose a strong neutral for the walls to draw the eye away from the pattern- maybe Fired Earth Oak Apple for below the dado with FE Bone White above. You could create a panel behind the bed as in this cottage bedroom - wall shade F&B Shaded White, panel F&B Hardwick White. Boards painted in F&B Mouse's Back.
Thank you! I don’t hate the carpet will try to make it work. Yes lighting can be changed. I’m thinking of keeping the walls one color. I live in the northeast so natural light isn’t the best. What shades of paint will work?
