Kitchen island, remove?

Hi all,

im in my new house a year or so now and am trying to have the kitchen work better for us. There are 3 things in it at the minute, a table and chairs, an island and a 2 seat settee which I put in a couple of months ago as there was nowhere comfortable to sit. The sette gets lots of use now. The problem there isn’t room for all 3 things. The island doesn’t get any use, the cupboards are empty and the surface is just for putting things on as you can see!

I was thinking of removing the island, moving the table and chairs to where the island was and buying an L shaped sstree down to where the corner where the table is now. I want the kitchen to be somewhere where the family can sit while I cook etc.

Just unsure of removing the island and regretting it done the line?

If the cupboards are empty and you only use it as a dumping ground then get rid of it. It’s only a small island anyway. Your suggestion to move the table and chairs there and have a settee near the doors sounds good to me.

I think it is a good idea to get rid of the island. I just wonder about the heater being in the way of a l shape settee

I think I'd have an island that would work in your current kitchen. I agree with you trying to match the perimeter cabinets will not work quite right. How about a stainless steel type island? Or an island with a butcher block top? Something totally different so it looks intentional.

Hi all. We are converting our garage and putting on a rear extension. The extension is not in the attached plan. We need need ideas for kitchen layout. I'd love an island but not sure if it would fit. The garage measures 15ft8" by 8ft3" without insulation. We also have a large American fridge freezer (27.5in deep, 33in wide) to accommodate and I want a good sized larder press. Had been looking at a corner one by the window at the front but would this leave the window too small?

The settee would be beside the radiator, there is enough room to the wall if I move the plant, it’s just over 8foot

do the tiles run under the island? if not willi u be able to source more to match or would u be happy with a rug under table? you could also get a butchers block (on wheels) that could be parked against a wall in lieu of the island which would be useful for occasional use.

Would agree that a dining table in place of island would look and work well in the space, as would the l shaped sofa. I would look to move the radiator. Maybe get a vertical one, I have just put one in a house I'm renovating for my sister and it looks great. Good

I entirely agree with your idea . It’s a “ mean “ little island and doesn’t serve its purpose. Also think a vertical rad would look great . We put one in our kitchen and it totally changed the room .

I think you’ve answered your own question - yes remove island and put the dining table there. Radiators can be moved if necessary or get one of those tall thin ones as has already been suggested. I love social spaces and I think it would really work. I actually moved my dining table into my sitting room and moved a sofa into the kitchen which I love. The sofas now looks onto the garden which is a bonus as I love watching the wildlife in the garden. A home should reflect how you live.

My kitchen island base is on industrial castors, so I can rotate it or reposition it. As yours doesn't appear to be plumbed or wired you could possibly do the same..

Do you have a garden? Is the garden behind the back wall?

If so you could rest the kitchen against the wall closest to the entrance. You could get a new kitchen still with an island and put the dining table just in front. Where the small window is at the front wall, you could extend and add sliding doors. There could be a seating area where you could place next to the doors.
