Improving the exterior of 1960s house

Hi All, We are in the process of buying 60s house and wonder how the existing bland exterior can be improved. I am thinking to changing the windows / cladding/ door , build new porch, change flat roof to pitched roof and build a balcony on. I am not too keen on rendering as maintenance can be expensive. Any advice please and also any online software I can use to try and visualise the exteriors house designs .

Hi,

here are two nice examples of revamped houses like yours. I'd keep the flat roof as I think it suits the style of the house. Perhaps make the horizontal line of the flat roof more prominent. And I don't really see the point of adding a balcony? Or you could perhaps turn that window into a French balcony.

I wonder what insulation is behind the tiles on the front of the house. My son purchased a similar house and decided to swap the tiles for brickwork and it was a blessing he did. There was no insulation at all behind it and it was perishingly cold in the house in the rooms it was connected too. Whatever you decide add insulation.

What about 6 massive pots? Two one either side of the bay windows and one on either side of the front door. (I too have a massive gray gravel drive way. Trying to plant through the gravel brings on a whole other set of challenges. Pots are just more practical, for me anyway.) I love those trees in the lawn area.:) And the green trim. Also, how would that bright area around the front door look painted a shade a bit closer to the color of the brick and stone areas?

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

Hi All, Back again as contract exchange is almost there. I have been looking at few options as below:
1. New porch.
2. New Porch/Garage roof - Either flat or pitched (still to be decided).
3. New windows.
4. New Garage door.
5. Repaint the roof tiles.
6. Cladding, no example of coloured cladding I have seen are that impressive. So I am thinking about one of the below options:

- Repaint the existing tiles
- Slip Brick
- New Clay hanging tiles ( Rustic ones )

Advice please especially if any of the above idea should be No go, e.g. is painting the tiles (wall or roof) is good idea?

I am trying to visualize so if anybody can help or recommend website/software I can use to draw.

You can do all the things you mentioned but what are you trying to achieve?? Make it more modern? Make it more attractive? Improve insulation qualities? Add value? What's your budget? I think once you know it will help you to decide what needs doing and focus replies from Houzz contributors.....
