Bedroom storage dilemma

Hi all. I have a slight issue with how to use the alcoves in the master bedroom of the house I am renovating. The alcoves are about 50cm deep so not deep enough for a wardrobe with a horizontal hanging rail as it will overhang the bay window. Will it look ok if I go ahead and have them there anyway? Any advice on how to deal with this? Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi, How about rather than a side hanging rail - a front facing rail. See pic below.

You should be able to get 2 hanging on 1 side, and maybe 1 full hanging on the other but maybe check out the 3 steps in my storage blog post on how to figure out the right combination of flat to hanging ratio needed.

Hi Karty,

Is the wall that the door is currently on a stud wall? If so, maybe you could move the door to the right to put your wardrobes on the left as you walk in (if it's wide enough?) Then closer to the window, you could have a chest of drawers so as not to block any of the light.

i agree with most suggestions above. but dont remove your current rug because u can actually layer a faux fur rug over it. plus your rug has amazing rustic colours and u can use them as accents. maybe over time you may invest in new pillowcases/quilt covers complementing the colours of the rug..peach/mint/cream/ to name a few. may also add some mettalic cushions combo. you can always take them off if you want that summery feel in which switch to sweet pastels. a lot of pillows are important! lol! i'd get rid of the plant. the dressing table n side tables could be black (lacquer may be interesting)with gold knobs (think art deco). dressing table should be move to the side so you get more light and space near the window. maybe mirror can be placed against the window so ull also get natural light when you're admiring your reflection. ur room has an eclectic feel to it.. its great just needs some rearrangments thats all.

Firstly, get matching beds and put them end to end so the 6month old is closer to the door for checking on in the night. If you need a changing unit in the room then it could slot between the beds. I'd like to see pics of the wardrobe and the radiator wall. I'm imagining it is probably in an awkward place like smack in the middle of the wall ; D. How about getting a radiator cover and then above that making a shallow bookshelf for their smaller books, special toys and a few photos. Then I'd have matching wardrobes either side to store everything else! Décor - not sure if you're thinking that far ahead yet but I'd paint all the walls white to keep the timber from looking too yellowy (I doubt you've got time to be painting furniture!) get matching bedding for both beds, a wall decal (inexpensive and easy to change as they get older or if you sell the house) in pink, a basic white drum shade for the light (IKEA) and a set of pink or white eyelet curtains and pink tiebacks. Most importantly, have fun!

Hello,

What a light and spacious bedroom!

I have to agree with Nicola and think you should consider putting the wardrobes somewhere else, such as the wall on the left hand side as you walk in which would work well. If you can move the door a bit more to the right that would be great so then the wardrobes can fit right up to the wall. It is likely though this will not be very straightforward to do so you could centralise the wardrobes to that wall as you will not be able to fit the wardrobes right up to the opposite wall anyway because of the window. Then you could put a dressing table at the side near the window.

The alcoves either side of the chimney breast are quite narrow so you will not get much storage in these spaces anyway and I know like you say the depth is an issue. So I would look at putting chest of drawers in the alcoves as they would fit in well.

Thanks all, yes it’s a lovely bright room. Unfortunately I can’t move the door as it’s right against the wall to the next bedroom. I will see if I can put a chest of drawers in that space though and have a full wardrobe in the other alcove. Just not sure that will give me enough storage space for my clothes. Maybe it’s time to downsize my wardrobe!

Hi, you could still have wardrobes on the opposite wall as well? They don't just have to be in the alcoves as you do have the space for them.

I think you can probably get away with the 10 cm extra you need for a wardrobe with door. Especially if you have floor to ceiling curtains, which will cover up the part of the wardrobe that'll stick out in front of the bay, I think. I suppose you want to put your bed on the wall opposite the alcoves?

If you want to put the bed on the wall opposite the bay, you can use the wall opposite the alcoves for wardrobes, but they will then stick out in front of the other window. I'd prefer the wardrobes in the alcoves, with a chest of drawers on the wall opposite the bay.

See if you can turn the door around, so it opens towards the left wall.

Thanks Carolina. I like you idea about the curtains. The back of the bay to the edge of the window is about 60cm so might be able to squeeze the wardrobe in there. 🤞🏽
