coal fireplace leaking smoke at the top

I have an old house and an equally old fireplace, although I suspect the fire surround is not original. the wall, and the fire surround are not flush, and a little smoke escapes at the top corners under the mantle piece. is there anything that I can do to funnel the smoke into the flue. I had thought of sealing the inside surround to the wall with fire cement, but ideal id like to stuff the cracks first. I see fire retarded foam, but im scared that isn't to use with direct heat. all help appreciated

Sounds like you don’t have enough draw and a chimney sweep could be what you need

Its not that, the chimney, if anything, has too much draw, its like a crazy inferno. Its because the fire place isn't flush with the wall. so as the smoke goes up, it sort of pools at the sides, then gradual escapes. my gut is that if I could find a suitable material to stuff in the back of the fireplace, between it and the wall, this would stop this, but im unsure what to use. But thanks for the reply

How big are the cracks?? You can buy fireproof sealant or even sealant marketed for use with flues - costs less than £10 and can get from big DIY places or Screwfix.
