How to fill gaps between kitchen units and cooker space?

Hi,

We're in the process of buying a new home. The current owners are going to take their range cooker with them, meaning we're looking at replacing it. Whilst I love the look of a range cooker, I'm not sure whether I'd ever make much use of it (versus cost of getting one) so I've been contemplating replacing it with a standard cooker which is much narrower. But what could/would I do with the extra space? How would/could I fill it? Do you have any ideas? Or is it simplest to just replace it with another range cooker? It's a beautiful kitchen so I'd rather not do any "hacking" jobs! :)

Think you need to bite the bullet and buy a range. I don’t like them but unless you want to refit kitchen you are stuck. Would vendor accept a sensible offer on the existing one?

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

I agree with maikola, turn under the stairs into storage. Maybe combine with a little desk for when the kids are older. I'd swap your dining and living area around. Have the tv on the long left wall with a small sofa a couple of feet in front of the doors and one opposite the tv. It does look as if a 5ft table would fit in the kitchen though? If you don't want to fill too much of the kitchen space consider a bench one side for you to use with chairs for the kids on the other. The area outside the kitchen could then be for the kids to play

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Hi. The kitchen looks lovely. As the windows are lower than the units I would avoid tiling or a splashback all the way round the kitchen. Maybe just either go for a decorative tiled splashback behind the hob or use a glass splashback. Keep it simple with clear/light coloured glass or look at other decorative ideas with wallpaper, art etc. Alternatively just tile that oven ŵall about a foot high, handmade metro tiles in a pale olive would look nice. I noticed you like copper so I don't know if this is an idea? If you can show pics of the kitchen?

I think a normal width cooker could work eg with a 40cm reduction in size you could fit open shelving/wine storage.

Buy a range- yes it might be more expensive than a standard cooker but the alternative is replacing worktop so it meets the new smaller appliance. Consider asking the owners to sell theirs- it’s not new so should be half the price or less.

@Victoria, @Jonathan Early on in the process, we did enquire about whether they'd consider selling their cooker. But it didn't lead to anywhere. As we didn't quite know the condition of it, and they're now in the process of moving it out to their new place, we thought it's better to get a new one ourselves (mid-range) if it wasn't straightforward to replace it with a normal cooker.

@Daisy England Space is about 100cm and with a standard cooker, probably about a space of 40cm left. Not sure what to put there so it doesn't look out of place.

@Ellie I was thinking like a trolley but for condiments etc. maybe? but need to sort of fit into the whole aesthetic of the kitchen... I don't have a pic unfortunately!

I think we might end up just getting a range cooker - especially if the cost of remodelling kitchen tops to fit a standard cooker plus a standard cooker works out the same as just getting a range cooker!
