Comments (0)We're in the process of planning a renovation of a 1980's bungalow and we're starting with the kitchen - how practical is it to use laminate flooring with spillage etc. Our kitchen worktops will be painted mussel and the island airforce blue with a white quartz worktop and we thought a wooden floor would be a nice contrast. I've painted my living room F&B Pigeon and railings on the skirting board to match the railings on the island in the kitchen. Comments (0)Hi, advice gratefully received. Love our new house, but the ground floor layout is not great. Long narrow kitchen facing east, garden is big so scope to extend. As it stands you come in from the hall into the lounge to get to the kitchen. I would like to have some separation so that the lounge can be closed when desired. Perhaps some double doors? I was thinking to use a chunk of the lounge and knock through into the kitchen which would also allow more light. Lounge is lovely and light, kitchen is dark after lunch. Ideal solution would be a side extension, but drains and pipes in the way so worried about the cost.. Would only require about a metre wide along the actual kitchen which I would then face towards the garden and create a sitting area. Any ideas welcome P.S. Conservatory is a junk room at the moment, facing a fence on the right hand side. The garage is used as a utility....See More

3 years agoIt’s a lovely kitchen. I love the simple white units. I like the idea of a lighter worktop, but why not go for something than tones with the floor rather than bright white? My sister has chosen a warmer quartz worktop (first picture below) and it does add warmth. I would also paint the doors and the dresser off white, or a colour to go with your future choices. Natural pine is rather dated but it can be transformed with a paint job. Below is my sisters kitchen and some more ideas. You could keep the units white and add a stunning wall colour to modernise it, a navy, a deep green or a blue like Farrow & Ball Oval Room Blue, a gorgeous muddy teal.

3 years agoSonia - thanks for your reply. The photo was a bit misleading in that the units and island are actually cream not white and the worktop we have chosen is not plain white but has flecks of grey in it as well as a few bits of silver sparkle. See photo below. I like your sisters kitchen but the main warmth I feel comes from the lovely wooden floor which obviously we do not have. I thought with the worktop and floor tiles both having grey in them, that would link in with having the units painted grey as we want a change from the cream. See tiled floor photo below.
My main question was whether to incorporate a colour such as yellow ochre on a wall as an accent colour or have the walls a pale shade of grey and use say blinds, cushions and maybe a splash back in yellow. We don’t want to paint over the pine dresser or doors as all our doors are pine so both sides would have to be the same and it would then look odd in the hallway against the other doors. Our house is a farmhouse style hence all the pine and outdated or not we quite like it! 😜
