Wouldn’t a tall radiator be a bit in your face in such a small room? I think maybe a small one on one of the side walls would be better, or under the window as you suggest, and it can be painted the same colour as the wall to help it blend in? The desk could go in front of the window and the radiator will keep him warm and toasty in the winter 🔥🔥

I think radiators are stupid places for radiators as if you close curtains the heat is trapped behind them.....

true - I think one of the reasons they were put beneath windows was to do with it being the coldest point in a room but I imagine with advancements in glazing that isn't necessarily the case anymore.

I agree with greenbeanie8 about why they were initially put in front of the window. It’s a daft idea. Ours got moved in our bedroom when we had a refurb and it was put on the side wall.

I like vertical radiators. I have 4 of them. They take up less wall space and, like Ellie says, don't trap heat behind the curtains.

Out 3rd bedroom is very similar and we found a tall but quite narrow and flat radiator that is on the right hand wall. Works really well there as even if there is something in f it, it isn’t completely blocked.

I too would go for under the window and you don’t need a big one for a room this size.

The desk could then either be in front of the window or against the right hand wall.

Seeing it’s not going to be used as a a bedroom (I assume) you don’t need curtains.

Venetian or roman blinds would be perfect.

In a small room at work we have the radiator under the window and have then built a desk along the wall above it using a piece of wooden worktop for the table top. Our handyman then drilled ventilation holes into the back of the worktop nearest the wall to prevent any warping. The end result was as cheap as chips but looks fab because it’s bespoke.

None of our radiators are under windows (as advised by house builder). Over time this has proved annoying, as limits wallspace for furniture. I remember reading something subsequently that radiators under windows help prevent draughts and aid airflow in some way?? Although it’s only a small room so can’t imagine it will make that much difference! Guess whoever is going to use the room most should decide! x

I’m in the radiator behind the door camp, too. We live in a barn conversion where it is just not viable to put radiators under the windows and we have no problems with air circulation, draughts etc. despite our living space being semi open plan.

A lot depends on how low your window sill is but in our study we built a desk right across the wall under the window using a length of timber worktop and some 60cm high IKEA kitchen cabinets and put a low radiator underneath the desk. It was a very cost effective solution but looks like an expensive bespoke study plus is really great to work in as the warmth goes exactly where you need it when sitting working (rather than heating the ceiling) and keeps you lovely and cosy. If you don't want to build in the study furniture you could easily do the same thing free standing.

@pollyannagal - this is what we have just discussed and it seems it's something we can both agree on. we like the idea of a bespoke look desk and a friend has started making them so seems a good idea. Unfortunately we can't put it behind the door as we will have storage there.

I would still put the radiator under the window especially if you have a worktop above it, I also install a ventilation grill above it in the worktop (flush), this will still allow warm air to circulate, it won't matter if occasionally papers, books etc. Cover it and you will leave the remaining walls completely radiator free.

Wherever you decide to put the radiator don’t forget to calculate the BTU’s (British thermal unit) to ensure you purchase the right size radiator for the room. You will find calculators online. All you will need is a tape measure to measure the dimensions of the room. A worthwhile exercise for the whole house before a refurb so that the system works efficiently and economically.

Double glazing means the radiator can go anywhere but a window wall is, as someone else said, dead space. My vote is for under the window with a deep window sill or fitted desk to deflect the heat back into the room. Short lined curtains and or thermal blinds would also help to conserve the heat.

I have used tall radiators before where the area under the window was too small. Tall radiators come in a number of different styles and colours so you can either make it a feature or be subtle with less impact. You can have a double radiator so you get the heat needed but reducing the width. You could also put in on the wall on the left so it would be hidden behind your door when open as we have done here so you can make best use of the space. Good luck

As already suggested a skirting radiator might be ideal here. They can run the full length of the wall or even two of the walls and give off a nice even heat. They don't take up much room and if you do a full wall length they are hardly noticeable

no real need for a radiator to be under window, always seemed a stupid place for them, heat just gets wasted. Place I past lived was built in 40s and the radiators were all under windows which was a boon in a poorly insulated house. only downside was lack of actual wall space.

I've been looking at short, wide radiators as well as skirting radiators for a barn conversion.. Stelrad do a 2m wide x 150mm high which gives off 1300watts and only projects by 96mm from the wall. A bit more expensive at £285 than a standard panel radiator but I have learnt over the years that the cost of the hardware is often only 30 to 50% of having the jobs done. It's also better to get a job done that you are pleased with than live with a cheap compromise - like a radiator on a wall - that you hate everytime you look at it.

If you have a modern house, it is not as key to the efficient heating of the room. So put a radiator somewhere where it takes up least space and is least awkward for other furniture positioning.

If you live in something old and draughty with single glazing, or rubbish double like mine, then it is the most sensible position.

For your room, I would suggest behind the door if you want it out of the way, as long as you keep the door closed of course!

You won't loose the heat if you have a blind instead of curtains

A room that size won’t need much more than a 600 by 600 double radiator. It won’t take up much wall space wherever you put it.
