cabin / granny annexe

Hi, has anybody built a granny annexe / cabin in their garden please? We’re looking into creating a self contained cabin / lodge and wondered how difficult it is to connect power / water etc? Thanks so much in advance 😊

Not a cabin, but we had a garage built at the bottom of our garden and the electrician laid a cable underground from the house to the garage. He also installed a separate fuse box in the garage so if anything happened to the supply in the garage it wouldn’t affect the house.

Thanks Sonia. Did the garage also have water? I’m wondering how easy (or not!) it will be to connect water and waste. Thank you

Hi danshell, no water. I’m not sure if you would need a plumber or builder for that bit?

Yes we have one, but we already had power and water so far into the garden, so it needed to be extended into the summerhouse. However drainage needed to be built down to the house (about 70m) - quotes for this alone were around £10k. But a smart company came up with a pump based solution which needed less digging and cost less overall - but it will require some maintenance as it is electric. I’d say your biggest problem is ‘habitable space’ - you need planning permission for this… ours is just a home office / gym, not to stay in so is done under permitted development
