Living/Dining Room Design
Hello!
First post here :-) I am currently in awe at some of your lovely houses!
Small project in comparison to some others but I wondered if any of you could give me advice on the layout for my new living room/dining room.
The images included are old from prior to buying my house. I have
painted it grey as a temporary measure and now I am finally ready to make it my own !
My plan is to remove the fireplace and have the whole room and ceiling plastered, so I have a nice blank canvas. But as you can see it is a bit of a strange shape, with the dining area at the back being quite thin? I am having new patio doors fitted at the back.
As you can see I will have a very long plain wall once the fireplace has gone!
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas of layouts, colours? I currently have a 3 seater sofa and two armchairs

3 years agoHi Trina, I have a similar layout to yours. I moved the furniture around earlier this year and now have my sofa in front of the window and the tv opposite in the right hand corner (where the corner of the sofa is in your pics). I have a couple of armchairs either side of the tv. I haven't found any furniture placement perfect, so it's just a case of what works best for you. Furniture can easily be moved around but the tv cables are another matter so if you have any new ones installed, keep the old ones in case you want to move the tv back!
One change I made for the better was to have a new door coming in to the sitting room. The new one has glass in and this makes the room feel less long and thin because light is also coming from the side and not just either end.
To further break up the long-thin-room look, I've put a piece of furniture dividing the living area from the dining area. Visually it makes the rooms look separate and you could do the same by using a rug.
I actually installed a fireplace in about the same place as you are removing yours!
I like traditional furniture which maybe very different from your taste, but just to illustrate I've put a photo below.

Thank you for your reply. Your layout is very similar you're right!
I was initially toying with the idea of keeping my fireplace. But thought i may be able to put the sofa against that wall with the TV opposite on the wall to open the room up a little more maybe? Below is a pic of that side of the room now, so where my feature wall is now I could potentially mount my TV, and then my two arm chairs in front of the window? But maybe that uses a lot of space for just my TV?
Good shout about the wires for the TVs. I will make sure to do that.
I really like how you have a piece of furniture which separates the rooms. That is a great idea.

I don't get very much sunshine until later in the evening. I am thinking of maybe a teal theme like below.

Comments (0)We recently put on an extension to our kitchen and although I'm not so much having trouble picking colours for the walls there, I do however find it difficult to match up the dining and living all of which are open plan .. the sofas in the living area are removable covers, one set taupe and the other set white, no problem there but my curtins were expensive and I'm reluctant to change them at the moment so really want something to tie everything together ..they are autumnal in colour ...I'd appreciate some advice on paint colours for the walls they dont have to be the same but would have to tone well together ..Thank you...See MoreDining/Living Room Help Needed

I have attached the measures as the pictures are from the original add and might look more spacious than it really is. The living room kinda has to happen where the fireplace is, which is also where you enter the room from the hall, but I am struggling to fit a couch in there that you don’t fall over. I’m thinking of moving the dining area to the black wall now and the couch to the other end of the room which is also the west and garden facing side. But then I’d lose the lovely fire place. I think I would do something like this: sofa where you have it now, TV on a long low console on the fireplace wall, tall cabinet(s) next to that to break up the length.

3 years agoHi, so are the sofas now cream? I like the sage green ideas and my sitting room is sage and I even have that wool throw! What sort of style do you like? Modern, country, Scandi etc? My walls are F&B Cromarty so here are a few pics. I really like Carolina’s layout.
