Old farmhouse curved fireplace - what hearth?

e have been renovating an English farmhouse and when we pulled off the old fireplace facia we found a lovely original curve behind it which we decided to keep for character. Since then I have struggled with how to create a hearth that fits the curve without spending ££££. We have a freestanding stove to go in and will have a wooden beam above. The hearth will sit next to a cream carpet.

Would love others to share ideas on what materials could work for this.

It should be possible. Most units allow an offset which would allow you to have the fireplace either left or right of the existing and still tie in to your existing flue pipe. One thing you will want to do is verify that the new unit you are buying is either compatible with the existing flue or will accept the same size pipe or smaller. This will allow you to hopefully reuse most of the existing chase and avoid getting into exterior framing, siding, and probably roofing work. There are many variables, hopefully this helps.

Snan, The bottom oval one in Eskandari's photos would also work in your room (or something like that). The oval shape visually gives height to the room which would work for you as well. I know that shopping around can sometimes be exhausting, but if you were up for the search that would be another option if you're not sure about the round one you have already. I would also look for something that combines the elements of your wallpaper as well as your fireplace (if you are not planning on changing it) in order to bring those together, i.e. try to bring in the color tones of the two.

I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Good luck and enjoy your home.

I think you should consider installing wood or laminate flooring for a more on trend look. Do this first so that you have a nice frame to place your furnishing. Keep the walls painted as they are for now while you figure out what you want to do furniture wise for the room I think you should consider where the TV will be placed so that you can have good viewing and then have the sofa placed opposite the TV. This way you can enjoy the room if tv is going to be placed here. After that the other pieces will fall into place for you. You might also consider making the mantel deeper to display the radio antique?It could be a nice focal point in the room and on the fireplace. Also I like the current color of your room....it will work while you are figuring out what goes where. Paint LAST when you have your color design established in your upholstery. No need to have 100 dollars worth of paint dictating what the sofa color will be. If you do not have funds now, then place things you have now and take your time deciding what you are going to do first. But as your walls look fine and you are not sure about furnishings then do the floor and wait for the rest as funds become available.

As that’s fire resistant you don’t need a separate hearth. You do need to have a marking of done kind where the “hearth” ends.

As in I have a solid floor and my stove is on the same tiles as the rest of the room and the “hearth” is demarcated by the grout lines. What are you intending to floor the room with?

Ahh yes so that was exactly what we have done in the other room, just tiled straight into it. The issue with this room is that it is carpeted so we need a different material. I am toying with the idea of stone tiles but if I go down that route I need to

A. work out how to cut them into a curve and

B. how to transition into the carpet

A piece of stone would look lovely. It could be sandstone, granite, marble. You will need to get someone to cut it in the right shape. Do you know any builders, tilers or landscapers? They will have the right cutting tool. You could use tiles instead, but they will need cutting too. I’m not sure you can attempt it yourself. Sorry I’m not much help here!

You can also use slate, I’ve done that before too. I like the idea of a curve, you must have at least 300mm from the stove, would the size of it allow you to do a circular hearth?

I think your best bet is to get a piece of stone cut to fit from a stone merchants. We had slate cut to fit for our hearth. I can’t remember the exact cost but I think it was around £100 five years ago. If you’re keeping the curve shape as a feature, it’s worth paying a bit more for it to stand out for the right reasons than making a feature of something that isn’t quite right.
