dressing room design help!!!

Hi- I need help, advice or suggestions with a spare room that I’m hoping to make into a dressing room and I’m stuck with the layout.

I’ve added photos below, it’s a decent size but slightly awkward. Initially I was just going to have a large chest of drawers and dressing table but it seems crazy not to maximise the space with a wardrobe. To keep costs down I was looking at freestanding wardrobes and like those similar to an IKEA 3 door wardrobe. The problem I am having is that on the wall where a large wardrobe would go nicely- there’s a radiator mid wall. Again I don’t want to move this to keep costs down, so thinking the dressing table/ drawers here. But then putting the wardrobe on the opposite wall means it comes out to partially block the window. Having it right opposite the door makes it slightly awkward as there’s a corner of wall that I assume houses pipe work and would come to the very edge of the mirror. So would it work having a large wardrobe in the middle of the wall opposite the door or would this look out of place/ awkward?

Hello, I have shown a layout below which I have put together. My suggestion would be to position the wardrobes where you were suggesting on the back wall and then when you get closer to the window you could have a chest of drawers which is no higher than the sill height. This means you do not block the light coming through the window and gives it a neater finish.

The boxing in the 2 corners look like they are hiding soil stacks so there is not a lot you can do about this, you just have to work with it. In an ideal situation you could put in fitted furniture which can be fitted around the boxing but I know that this is more of an expensive option. I have shown on the plan below freestanding wardrobes and a chest of drawers near the window and then the dressing table on the opposite wall. Have you looked at the Ikea PAX wardrobes? They have so many different storage options and would work really well in here!

Where the wardrobes do not quite go up to the wall near the mirror you could balance it out by perhaps putting in some hanging plants from the ceiling or maybe some kind of light feature?

Have you got enough space to put the wardrobe where the mirror is now? Then you could hang the mirror near the window and give you more space behind the drawers and dressing table.

Sorry, yes, I didn't explain very well, did I... I meant that as your room seems to be quite light, floor included, a dark grey that matches the bird on your wallpaper would give you that wow factor (pic1 below). You could then work on the layering textures within the same colour palette too with the rest of your accessories (rugs, mirrors etc). Or if you're not too keen on greys, pick out one of the other colours if you prefer- you have a good selection of pink, blue, green or yellow. As long as you match the exact shade you can't go wrong, in my humble opinion. I've attached a few pics below to show you what I mean xx

Thanks Hannah, this is very similar to what I was hoping would work so it’s nice to know someone thinks it can work too! I have looked at the IKEA pax and think I will choose one of those. Thanks again!

Natural light in a room is gold and the window is your major feature.

I would urge you to be more inventive and this may be a small send on professional advice? There are all sorts of storage systems and you want to put the room and its fixed features first. Otherwise anything that goes in will always look compromised.

I would not be obstructing any window in a design.

You idea of using freestanding furniture (perhaps in conjuction with fitted?) is great - certainly more personal!

Morning!

What a great creative exercise!

First question - do you need this radiator to work? If not, then you could just turn it off and hide it at the back of a wardrobe (cut out a panel to get it in), or have it capped and removed rather than relocated. If you do, then Hannah's idea to have it under a dressing table is great! Warm toes too!

There are a few things I recommend doing when you start a walk in wardrobe design - the first is to list the contents of your wardrobe currently - and then add some 'room to grow' for items that you see yourself buying more of. This gives you a really good idea of what you need; tall hanging, short hanging, shelves, drawers, jewellery/belts/accessories storage etc. This is just as relevant for IKEA furniture as it is for bespoke fitted units.

Next is to consider whether you want closed doors, ie a dressing room, or open storage like a walk in wardrobe. The second may be better for a room with windows and boxings to negotiate, and you can get a joiner to create some divisions for you with rails and drawers for a similar cost to IKEA wardrobes which are a bit more limited in size.
