what to do with this stairs / floor join

Hello!

You lovely people helped me in the past with some ideas for my lounge - it’s nearly finished, just the flooring to go in and I’ll update with some pics!

In the mean time we are redoing our stairs. We’ve ripped the old carpet off and I’m going to paint the stairs white and have a carpet runner & rods put in. However, since removing the old carpet we’ve been left with this awful gap by the floor. The tiles are discontinued so it’s unlikely I can replace them. Has anyone got any ideas? I was thinking some flexible moulding but how would that work with the carpet ?

Yes I think some flexible beading would work well there. Either white to match the stairs once painted or wood to match the hall floor. I would speak to your carpet supplier to find out whethr they would rather have the beading installed before they put in the runner, or whether they would rather do the runner first and then beading either side of the runner. Personally I think beading first would look neatest but I don’t know if that causes issues for the fitters when they attach the bottom of the runner so best to ask.

I would discuss it with your carpet shop as minipie suggests. They usually have a great selection of trims and thresholds.

I have to join this discussion of Hardwood in the kitchen. I am a little biased in this discussion because of being a tile contractor for almost 30 years. I have seen alot of hardwood kitchen floors. I have to give you the cons of putting hardwood in. Hardwood floors look great. As far as durability I am not sold. Hardwood floors look great when they are first put in. Depending on the traffic in the kitchen I give them about 4 to 5 years is when you see significant wear. I have seen alot of hardwood floors in kitchens with water damage. Now I know you think you wont have a leak from your dishwasher, refrigerator or a general plumbing leak. Well these things do happen and when it does the hardwood needs to be totally removed. Some times this is not so easy if the hardwood goes under the base cabinets. I am not saying do not put hardwood in the kitchen I think you should look at whats going to work for you. There are plenty of porcelain tiles that will give you the look of hardwood but give you the durability of a porcelain tile. Tile installed properly will last a long time. Hardwood will last but it will look warn to the point that it would need to be refinished at a cost around $2000.00 depending on the size of the room. I don't want to upset the hardwood floor lovers I have it all over my house except the bathrooms and kitchen. The floor is 20 years old 4 kids 2 dogs and still looks great. I am sure what ever you choose it will look great.

No pics attached but where the staircase is in a house is somewhat irrelevant. What IS relevant is that the stair act as a creative connector between floors, serving a function beyond vertical circulation. Poor stair dissect a house. Great stairs connect it.

What I have always thought is, if you try to "match" an existing floor it looks like you tried and missed. When you go with something completely different, the result is yes, I wanted something different, and here it is. Especially if you lay it in a different direction. Does that make sense?

You could create an ensuite by borrowing space from the second bedroom, accessing it from the master. I would create one large luxury family bathroom by joining the current bathroom and the adjoining room into one. If you don't want to lose a room, you could swap the purpose of the two rooms, creating a medium sized bathroom and a small box room/study (expensive for some benefit). Lastly, if you really want to maintain the number of rooms but gain a bigger bathroom, you could move the family bathroom to the bottom, right-hand room, if plumbing allows. Hope this helps.

You could carpet the. Ottoman step then have a runner for the remainder.
You might also consider retiling the hall- it’s probably not as expensive as you think
