Suggestions please for L shaped room.
Comments (8)Hi there, It's always difficult working out the best place for a fireplace and indeed a tv but what I would ask is why have you opted for an L-Shaped extension? Have you got lots of constraints on the land or the garden? Long and thin extensions can always be a problem as they lack the width to create nice spaces without bottle necks or furniture blocking circulation and people movement. One of the things you will have to think about is the venting or flue / chimney and then there's the regulations about the stove being a minimum distance away from combustible materials. It would be nice to be able to look at the burner while you're facing into the garden so maybe a wall on the patio side to break up the glass doors and then add more light in from above to make it a little cosier. Sometimes too much glass can feel / look cold. The TV is always a problem but I suggest again to possible mount it on a wall but remember if you have the screen facing all that glass you will get reflection problems. Maybe you need to make a feature wall out of slate or stone that would have the wood burning stove against it and the TV offset a little on the same wall. Then have your glass doors either side so when you're sat on your sofa you can see the garden / patio all while sat in front of your stove and viewing the tv. Its a difficult one all in all but if you have the opportunity to alter the L shape and make at least one leg of it slightly wider it may give you a better option for the burner, sofa and the cosiness without the feel of a long thin room with not many passing places. Just a couple of suggestions but as I can see the design brief or land size / constraints etc I might be a little off the mark. Cheers. Comments (5)Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!...See MoreHouzz Live Chat - Designing a Dream Kitchen, 1 pm, 15 July 2016
Comments (80)A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years....See MoreAdvice on picture windows!
Comments (0)Hi, We're buying a new house and the windows aren't in great shape so we're looking to change them all. It's a 2 story, white rendered, 1980's box shaped house. On the ground floor, there's a front door in the middle of the house. On either side, there's a living room window but the windows aren't exactly the same size (same height, different width). On the 1st floor/top floor, there are 3 equal sized bedroom windows. We'd like to go with a contemporary look for the house and after talking to our window suppliers, we could go with centre top swing windows in Aluclad for the 3 bedroom windows and fixed pane picture windows for the 2 living rooms. So clear glass with no lines or bars across all 5 front facing windows. (NB: Fire regs and ventilation can be covered through smaller windows on the side of the house for both living rooms). I really like the idea of a clear view onto my garden with no lines or bars across the glass and privacy is not a concern as we're well set back from the road. In the computer generated images, the picture windows look really nice but I'm a bit concerned as I have literally never seen this style of window applied to any similar style house!! Even the window supplier had to check it to ensure it could be manufactured that way. I'd really appreciate any advice, suggestions or images of houses with picture windows that they could share? Thanks a million!!...See Moresnthouse
